Credit score: very poor. Is this a good way to get it up?

The last 12 months have been pretty abysmal and I haven't kept good care of my finances. Here is where I stand:

547 credit score (experian)
6 credit cards
£3728 debt
6 missed/late payments over the last 12 months (none recently but this is pretty major from what I've read).

Say if I pay off all debt this week, cancel 5 credit cards, and the last one I buy everything I need on and pay off the balance in full at the end of each month, can I expect my credit score to rise by say the end of this year? I don't expect to get into the 900's any time soon, but I mean by a halfway decent amount? What can I expect?

Thanks!

Doesn't matter. The score is irrelevant.

Manage your accounts well, and your credit rating will improve, making it more likely lenders will lend to you in the future. It's an ongoing process.

The figure you have is pretty much worthless.
Yes, you can expect the score to rise, but don't expect that missed and late payments to come off your history that fast.
