Selling homemade dog treats

Hi

I was thinking about selling homemade dog treats just to local friends and family. I was wondering if anyone else has done this and what sort of insurances you got?

I've spent a lot of time looking on the Internet and it seems most people give up because its so complicated!

Thanks in advance for any help

Have they given up because of problems with insurance etc. or because there is just not a market for homemade dog treats? As a dog-owner I suspect the latter. However perhaps you should try posting this on the pets forum for other dog-owners opinions as my view on dog treats might not be typical.
  • The pet forum is the place for the dog side of things, but the home made side can apply to other things. I know someone whose mother makes lovely jam which she gives as Christmas presents. They were discussing selling it, but when they heard what this would involve they decided to forget it. Insurance, certificates ... it could be worse for products for human consumption, but it all seems designed to deter people from starting 'micro enterprises' and adding to their income.

  • I couldn't decide where to post, if it should be pets or small business thx for the responses though.

Mst ppl seen to give up because of the insurances, certificates and FSA rules.

Then there is registering with trading standards too.

This wld be my only source if income and the business would also cater for other pet care services.

There are certain laws around labeling and quality you'd have to adhere to in order to get insurance - some things are toxic to dogs, eg chocolate, so you'd need a vet to approve your recipe. Its not all about stopping small enterprise, it's about safety and standards
