Keeping phone number help - Primus to O2

Hello home phone experts
I recently moved house and as we were out of contract, decided to move my landline from Primus to O2.
I've checked and my local exchange is the same and I've had no trouble moving the number in the past.
This time, however, it failed. O2 say that when they tried to get the number released it wasn't.
Primus say that they are happy to release the number but not until 14th March, as they required a month's notice that we would be cancelling.
I contacted O2 and explained that Primus would be happy to release the number and could we possibly try again on 14th? The operative said no, they would only try once and as it has failed then they've allocated us a new phone number.
Is there anything left I can try? I've had the phone number for years and work from home. If there's something I can try, I'd like to give it a go before I have to let all my contacts know.
It's so frustrating knowing that in a few days time the number will be sitting unused in a pool, waiting to be taken up!
Many thanks

Cancel your order and start again.
You do know that you will be taken by sky if you go to o2?0 -
Thanks for the reply, Quentin. I didn't know at the time - I just found out about the Sky thing. I am considering cancelling the order, yes. Just hope I haven't left it too late.0

So if you want to retain your number, and are still in the cooling off period, the cancel the order now, before it's too late.
It's only 3 days to 14/4-this Thursday! No free lunch, and no free laptop0
