I back up everything on my laptop to USB hard drive - after doing it this time, I realise I have overwritten the new stuff with the old stuff, instead of the other way round.
Is there any way of salvaging this?

Download recuva and point it to your usb drive and do a full deep scan and see what it can recover for you.

This is one thing that I dread doing myself, so I check, double-check and then check again before starting the backup.
The answer will be entirely dependent on what software you used and what type of backup was made.
If - for example - you are using disk imaging software to create a complete image of the hard disk then chances are there is no way back. I'm fairly sure that Recuva won't help in that situation.
Other types of backup may be reversible. Until you say what you actually did in detail it's impossible to answer your question.0 -
Managed to find a windows feature that if you right click and then click restore, it can restore it to the previous restore point - thank heavens !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:beer:0

Unfortunately, system restore will only restore system files and not any documents/pictures/videos etc you have created, so if it was those you have lost I think you will be out of luck.stphnstevey wrote: »Managed to find a windows feature that if you right click and then click restore, it can restore it to the previous restore point - thank heavens !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:beer:0 -
I'm not sure I understand what you have done.stphnstevey wrote: »I back up everything on my laptop to USB hard drive - after doing it this time, I realise I have overwritten the new stuff with the old stuff, instead of the other way round.

Do you mean you have copied the old files from the hard drive and overwritten the newer files on the laptop?0
