Villa / Gite in France

Options
Can anyone point me in the right direction where I can find a decent Villa/Gite in France in August?

I specifically want it to be a detached property with a private pool that isn't overlooked (don't worry, its not for any reason than the fact someone is embarassed with people watching them sunbathing and swimming etc!) - there will be two adults, two small kids and a 9 year old, they can all pretty much amuse themselves so not fussed about much more than the pool and some grass.

We need to be able to drive within about 4 hours from Cherbourg or St Malo but not fussed where and need the price to be under £1,000  (for a week)

Am I asking too much, and if not, where can I find such a place??

thanks in advance!

  • I thoroughly recommend Gites De France http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites - a French based booking agent. You book with them but meet the owner / assistant at the residence. Most of the website is in English but BabelFish translation website will assist if, like me, your French isn't brilliant!

We have managed to book a week in June for 8 with pool for under £400. Don't know summer prices but they don't appear to be as horrific as some of the English booking agents. You will have to pay a caution/bond when you get there but generally you can pay for the rest on-line. Prices are rated according to 'ears of corn' - think 3 is the best. Places are typically French - shabby chic I think we would call it!

We have also used Norfolk Line to sail. Really cheap. Sail from Dover to Dunkerque/Dunkirk.

Thanks everyone for the help! I am checking out the websites right now!!

I am having trouble finding anything 'private' tho - some seem to have the owners property on site and others have a shared pool, can anyone point me to something that is completely private with no onlookers?? Its just that my OH wont go swimming usually as he is self conscious of himself in swimming shorts and wont swim if there is anyone else around so I would love it so much if he could gain a bit of confidence and have a great holiday!!

I dont spose a pool is that important to him but it is to me and the kids and to have him swimming with us would be amazing!

I just can't seem to find anywhere from the links above that is really detached or doesn't have a shared pool!! aghhhhh!! i'm tearing my hair out here!! :)

    Just did a quick search on https://www.cottages4you.co.uk - do advanced search with your dates, all areas, and pool required, quite a few for around £1000 in August, mostly in the Dordogne, which is beautiful but maybe a bit too far to drive. Anyway, these ones looked nice;
    W10502, W13355, W13333, W13176 (I only searched the first few pages!)

    Wow thanks!!!

I think I am going to have to look a bit further South, altho the middle two were only to 6 hours from Caen and the first and last two 7 or 8 hours from Caen so it may be that we just have to choose one of the closer ones in the Dordogne!!

I love the region too, from what I can remember as a kid its pretty beautiful!

I just hope its beautiful enough to amuse 3 kids in the back of a car for that length of time - or maybe thats what portable DVDs players are for - LOL!!

Thanks again!!! I gonna continue my search with renewed enthusiasm! :D
