Vent: ebay - utter morons

Options
I posted elsewhere about fraudulent use of my bank card on ebay. To summarise, an account had been set up using my details and I was charged sellers' fees for a transaction I hadn't made. (We can only wonder at the crapness of a system that allows the same bank card to be used on two different accounts, but let that pass). I reported it as a fraud and got my money back from my bank. The bank liaised with ebay and sent me a photocopy of the actual transaction, which turns out to be some lowlife scum selling a car.

Roll forward to today and I receive a letter from a debt collection agency to recover the fees! Ebay, cretins that they are, thought that it would be a great idea to instruct recovery of their debt from the person who was victim of the fraud in the first place, the fraud that was made possible by their lax security. Now the person from the debt collection agency seemed to understand this and took all the details, and hopefully I won't hear of it again, but how pathetic is an organisation that works like this?

The debt recovery deal doesn't worry me in the slightest but I get uptight when I see incompetence and corruption going on around me.

Fleabay are a pretty scummy outfit all in all.

But, as you say, it's their rank incompetence that surprises as much as anything.

I closed my account today. Haven't used it for years and the financial details are all out-of-date but maintaining an account with them makes me feel unclean. It said, "Closing your account can take up to 180 days". What a joke that place is.

Further to my OP, I received a second letter from the same debt collection agency a couple of months back. Yet again I explained at length that it was not my debt and yet again proved that it was not, and they yet again agreed over the phone that the debt was spurious.

Fast forward to today when I get another letter in red, entitled DEBT COLLECTION, this time from a different debt collection agency. It seems when the first agency finally realised there was no debt, ebay decided to pass the collection on to someone else. I rang the agency and told them in no uncertain terms to stick it and that I'll not be communicating with them again. I would say I looked forward to seeing them in court, except that's not likely on account of them not having my current address.

ebay are either incompetent beyond mortal understanding and incapable of fair dealings or they're making a concerted effort to make money off the back of a proven fraud. Either way they're filth.

Indeed, that's why I couldn't be bothered explaining the entire fiasco again to this bunch - all they're interested in is the money so I'm happy for them to waste their time in pursuing a debt that they'll never recover.

eBay sell on the "debt", doesn't matter to them whether it is legitimate or not they get 10P in the £ or whatever %

Sounds about right. They've essentially made money from fraud. Nice company.
