TV licensing - why don't they check their records?

There has been various complaints regarding the TV folk recently. If your premises covered with a licence - ignore as you are legal - point out once but don't rise to challenge. If like my workplace with a tv and video for totally course and training purposes, I send them a standard letter off the computer (actually now remember they have'nt sent stock letter for a couple of years). If you know you are legal nothing to fear!

We pay our licence by D/D, so were upset when we bought a new TV and started getting these threatening letters about not having a licence. It turns out that the retailer had put a couple of letters of our name and address incorrectly - and that was enough to generate these letters from TVL. Double check the details on these letters.0

You don't need to give them any name at all, if they don't know who you are they cannot act - they have no real power. The only reason people get prosecuted is because they admit to having no licence.
I do despise the whole licence principle - why should I contribute against my will for talentless idiots like Jonathan Ross to get paid absurdly high salaries for a few hours a week?

Thanks ZZ. Have been and signed their petition. I tuned my tv off the channels years ago and just use it to watch pre recorded things and for the games console which is pretty much all it was for before.
You can have a tv without a licence as long as you promise not to watch anything broadcast. Though unless you live in an area where there's a lot of people without one (which presumably is why they target council estates and areas of high student housing) they don't even bother checking.
My main beef with the BBC programming was that if I wanted to watch the bulk of BBC programmes I'd have to pay for a subscription to the advertising channel they'd sold them to. UK Gold is one that especially comes to mind. I also think when they make dvd's of their programmes for sale, all licence payers should be sent free copies.If you always do what you've always done you'll always get what you've always got.
culturejammer: you know what pennies are AWESOME for?

culturejammer: it only costs a single penny

culturejammer: i now use that system to value prices of things
culturejammer: for example, a thirty dollar game has to be at least as awesome as three thousand catpennies0 -
PS. Erm... Do I recall seeing on here somewhere that Martin Lewis had a BBC show?? (I'd add some brown nosing platitudes here if I thought they'd sound half sincere
)
