i'm just looking at booking a multisegment to toronto and back from newyork for £465 in october or september.
adding the toronto to newyork adds an extra £150
so was thinking 3 nights toronto, a bus train to buffalo and fly from there to nyc as its cheaper,
questions
from buffalo the falls are 25km, is there good public transport links to the falls and is it cheap, whats buffalo like as we are thinking of spending a night there before flying to new york
is the boarder crossing into the USA straight forward..
ie flying into canada to then cross the border into usa by bus/train. would this be seen as a bad way to get into the usa.
whats the weather like around october time is it a mixed bag or dry/wet
(would it be better to go late september)
wheres the best place to stay in toronto, is it downtown. ??
can anyone find a nice hotel in nyc for less than 500 bucks a night lol

The train from Toronto to Buffalo stops at Niagara Falls, on both sides of the border, so there is no reason to stop at Buffalo and then try and get back to the Falls. But if you want to, all the information you need is herehttp://www.niagarafallslive.com/Niagara_Falls_Transportation_Links.

Lots of tourists do what you plan, but be prepared for a wait at the border to get into the US, and most people think the views of the Falls are better from the Canadian side. Buffalo has no known redeeming features other than being the nearest airport on the US side to the Falls! In Toronto you should certainly stay Downtown, we stayed the Novotel and were very happy with the choice.
Weather wise Toronto can get cold earlier in the year than New York, If you can I would choose September rather than October but the way the weather is these days, there's no guarantees!0 -

think we'll take a chance on october, the last few european holidays i've done in october has been suntans or snow jackets
looked at jetblu who fly from buffalo to nyc for 80 dollars each..
so i just need to decide/plan on a daytrip to niagra and fly the same day or overnight in buffalo or niagra and get an early flight to new york.. no point returning to toronto for a more expensive flight.
looking at prices it may be far cheaper to get a night in buffalo/niagra for £70 and an early morning flight into NY where hotel prices seem to be ludicrous..0 -
I went last year begining of October and it was jumper weather during the day,at night it was bit colder nothing too bad though.0

Flights are certainly cheaper if you are not flying across the border and JetBlue are an excellent airline so that is a good idea. If you take the train from Toronto you can be in Niagara just after 1000, three hours was enough for me, the place was ruined by commercialism and after the Miad of the Mist boat trip, I was ready to leave so I would be tempted to try and get to Buffalo the same day and fly to New York. The views are better on the Canadian side but if you want an easy way to do it, take the train from Toronto across the border to Niagara NY, the train allows 2 hours for border transfer, don't you just love the Americans, and then when you have seen the Falls you can get a shuttle to the airport and leave the same evening?0

Checkout megabus.com and click on the US flag. I seen NYC to Toronto for $1 one way a few weeks ago!0

Have you had a read through the New York sticky at the top of the board? Lots of useful info on there for that part of your trip.
Regarding hotels, yes Manhattan is pretty expensive! For some budget but decent quality options, consider looking at some of the hotels in Long Island City, Queens. It's just across the river from the east side of Manhattan and has very good subway links. Not sure about September/October but for my dates in August, rooms at the Country Inn & Suites and the Verve over there (both consistently recommended here and on Trip Advisor) were $120 + tax a night including breakfast. You wouldn't be right in the centre of things, but it is a decent option ifyou want to save some cash on hotel rates without staying somewhere really dingy in Manhattan itself.
For what it's worth, I've since moved my reservation to the new Holiday Inn Express Herald Square (near Macy's and the Empire State Building) as I got an amazing deal with Priority Club points which is only costing me $105 a night, but I'd have been more than happy over in Queens if I hadn't found a better price in a more central location.0
