Windows Update Problem

I had a problem before with error messages talking about synchost.exe and later svchost.exe, which happened after an automatic Windows update seemed to get stuck. The PC then kept freezing up. I am posting this from work.
I posted on this board and did a system restore and then followed Browntoa's instructions for malware and spyware removal. All has been fine and dandy since.
Last night, as I switched off the comp, an update started and then stopped and I got the svchost.exe error message again. Is there a problem with these updates? I am running Windows XP. I can do the system restore and removal stuff again but it is a PIA and I would like to stop this happening in the future.
Should I be changing some settings to stop the automatic updates? Are they not a good thing?
Also, a day or two ago, I got a pop-up message when logging on to YIM advising me to download a security patch. Could that be where these problems have come from?
please help me, you lovely, lovely techie people.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

Personally I always set windows update to tell me when new updates are available but not to update them, that way I can choose when to do them.
What's YIM? What exactly was the security patch it told you to install? It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

My guess is Yahoo Instant Messager"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

YIM is Yahoo Instant Messenger. I can't remember what exactly it said, but it told me that there was a new security download and the box appeared as I logged on to YIM
I have been googling and finding info under "Windows Update Broke my Machine" - seems like this is a common problem and might be related to the windows update and not the yahoo stuff.
my question is, what steps do I need to take to sort it out and prevent it from happening again. If I turn off the automatic updates, how do I know which ones to get in the future?
thanks for all the help."Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."0 -
