Hi, for the last 6 months ive been riding intensely, 25 miles a day 3/5 days a week. Some day's i'll do 40-50 miles depending on conditions and my desire.
Now, about two years ago i used to do this same regimen but i only ate Brown Rice, Tuna, Vegetables and Fruit...the weight literally flew off during the summer.
However ive recently got into a serious habit which i felt creeping up on me over the years..
Whenever i ride my bicycle i get a POWERFUL craving for Fruit Pastilles, now, i get plenty of protein in my diet, fibre and Carbs. So im sure its not to do with my diet, i also supplement with whey protein.
Eating Fruit Pastilles on my journey makes the journey more fun, i also have something to look forward to, they seem to give me alot of energy (however this could be a placebo due to pleasure), and they taste too good for me to quit..
Im quite addicted..
Please dont urge me to stop eating them, its not gonna happen, i know that sounds stupid there just sweets i know but, i like them almost as much as i like my girlfriend..lol
What i do is eat about two tubes during each ride, sometimes three..

Question: How detrimental is this to fat loss considering that im getting everything else right and in proportion?
Also, seeing as im not gonna quit them (im only willing to go down to a strict two tubes per ride), what can i do?
Should i eat them both before the journey? After? During?

Its really frustrating, i want to lose weight and i think its still possible whilst eating Fruit Pastilles but it might take longer, yet, i know this and cannot give up the pastilles because...I DONT WANT TO.
I seriously don't, and wont. And yet, elsewhere in life and in more important aspects I am a very disciplined person.

Please help.

Fruit Pastilles are probably not the worst thing from a fat and calorie perspective. I used to do Weight Watchers many moons ago and under their old points system one tube was only 2 points. I was allowed 20 points per day of all food and drink to put that into context, so I'd estimate that they are only around 150 calories per tube. Compare that to some chocolate and they won't seem so bad.

However, the sugar!!! You'll be lucky to still have your own teeth in a few years time if you eat Fruit Pastilles every day! I am being serious now. Someone I know had 4 teeth removed after a year of regular snacking on Fruit Pastilles. I'm not sure how many that meant they were eating and they were spacing them out throughout the day which is probably worse than just eating a packet in one go, but still they are almost entirely sugar and sweeteners (plus a few other nasties like gelatine for good measure).

    Really depressing comment...

Why are the best things in life always so harmful..?

    Oh well, goodbye teeth.

Sometimes i think this craving is making up for my childhood (many moons ago).
When i was a child i rarely ate sweets, it seems im making up for it now.

A pound of body fat equates to approximately 3500 calories. So you would need to burn 500 calories more than you eat each day to lose approximately one pound per week. How many calories are in a packet? Look at the nutritional content to work out carbs, sugars, protein, etc. I think you would have to calculate all of this and some how deduct it from your daily intake or up your exercise regime considerably? I'm no expert, so this is just an idea?!?!?!?!

Honestly though I think you are kidding yourself if you are unwilling to reduce/cut them out of your diet, but please do prove me wrong, maybe you'll be able to crack this!?!?!?!?!

    Good Luck

    Oh well, goodbye teeth.

If only it were that simple!

This isn't going to be ....... one day you have teeth, get a bit of a twinge, go to dentist, next day you have full dentures.

Its going to be a slow deterioration going through fillings, broken failed fillings, abscesses, root fillings, failed root fillings, extractions, partial dentures to full dentures.

It will cost you a fortune, even if you find an NHS dentist to take you through the deterioration. There will be weekends of pain when you can't find emergency care, there will be dentists refusing to treat you anymore because you refuse to take responsibility for your own dental health, and at many points in the next 10 years you will be asking yourself "Why was I so stupid?"

But hey - it's your life.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Sugar added and fat added foods should be maximum 10% daily calories for basic health, if you are exceeding that you should be cutting down. The negative effects are NOT mitigated by exercise: sugar can suppress immune function, increasing systemic inflammation, damaging the lining of blood vessels, risking insulin resistance for example.

If you can't won't cut down you should seriously think about seeking medical help - if you were not willing to cut down on cigarettes or alcohol or illegal drugs it would be obvious there is a problem. The diets you refer to sound restrictive and imbalanced, this is absolutely wrong with an intensive exercise regime, fat should be coming off slowly not flying off. There is a fine line between being disciplined and having obsessive/ addictive traits, overtraining is as bad as undertraining as it puts the body into a state of stress (burns muscle, holds fat).

Your body needs healthy fats, carbs, protein, fibre, vitamin, minerals and antioxidants from a very wide variety of real wholefoods not supplements, a five times a week workout routine can easily double your needs for all macro and micronutrients. Minerals particularly are easily sweated out. Restrictive or imbalanced diets can lead to cravings (esp. sugary and fatty foods) and cause you to lose muscle and hold onto fat, reduce the metabolism.

I can't believe you said that, you can't have meant it? Apart from the sugar damage to your body aspect of your diet, there is not only the expense of dental work, but the aches/pains/aggro/inconvenience etc etc.

After going through 1 root canal, it now turns out my tooth has split and needs to come out, I really, really do not want to loose a tooth. It's the first time I've had big treatment like this and it's not nice. And that's just one tooth!! God forbid having a mouthful of problems!!

I would agree with Firefox, and if the craving is that bad, it would suggest a deficiency in your diet somewhere.

Do you eat fruit at all? Try eating more fruit before you get on your bike and see if that helps with the craving. It's the closest healthy thing to fruit pastilles.

You could try cutting down 1 packet at a time. So go from 3 to 2 to 1 to 0.

If you don't cut back just imagine being diagnosed with diabetes, then not being able to eat them or if you do you'd have serious repercussions on your health.

Rowntrees Fruit Pastilles arr 350 calories per tube. Therefore 1050 calories for 3. This will make a huge difference to your overal diet/weightloss etc.

See if you can ween yourself onto something sugar free.
