Facials ... are they worth it?

Options
I have recently turned 40 and am thinking more and more about facial care.

I am a sales person and hate, hate, hate being sold to. I just put up an 'I am not listening' barrier as soon as I even think something is going to sell me something over expensive that I don't need.

However, I am thinking now, are facials worth it?

Can anybody convince me that I should spend £40 a month and an hour of my time having one?

  • Ha ha, I had to laugh at your 'an hour of my time'!!

I always get groupons or similar & I love a massage and facial. It is a treat for me, but tbh with two kids, I go for an hour of peace! My skin is really dry & it feels lovely when I come out, but I have no skin care regime.

Thank you for your lovely reply. I don't think I would enjoy it (or certainly not enough to spend £40, I would enjoy a new top far more and it would be far more lasting!).

Do you think your face gets the benefit? Do you look younger, smoother, more radiant etc afterwards?

If you do it regularly it will have benefits.

Aside from that, the pure relaxation of it is worth the money!

But how is it worth the money? What benefits does it give you?

Oh and thank you so much for the tip (on my other thread) about the Lush face masks. After you recommended the Ayeisha face mask, I picked one up yesterday and it really did make a difference, mainly with the masking of pores, lovely! Thank you x

I personally don't think they do anything you can't do yourself. I only go for one, if I see a groupon local, so I would only spend £20 for an hours treatment and I go for an hour of peace and relaxation & enjoy the pampering.

I do find my skin looks nicer and feels so much softer, but that's only because I don't ever use a mask or moisturise.

I'm sure if you followed a skin care regime, maybe use some anti-ageing stuff (no offence, they suggest you use if from 20!) I would think you'd get the same benefits.

I don't have any skin care plan, I use shower gel every morning, wash my face with water in my hands and that's it. I occasionally use a hand lotion as my hands are really dry and get all cracked. I would like to moisturise daily, but I just don't have time.

I guess you need to ask yourself what you aim to get out of having regular facials. If you just want to feel pampered, relaxed, de stressed, and generally more zen then I'd say sure, a facial will do that.

If it's wrinkles you're wanting rid of or noticeable pores banished I'd say that's beyond the realms of having a facial at the beauticians once a month or so and more along the lines of microdermabrasion, fillers and acid peels.

I've been considering fillers and microdermabrasion myself (I'm 31) as I work in entertainment and I need to keep these things in check. x

Personally I would take the money that you would spend on facials and invest in good quality skincare. Why treat your skin once a month when you can use good products every night and reap the benefits?

Caroline Hirons blog is fantastic for unbiased skincare advice (I know a lot of fellow MSE'ers follow her too) She takes no cr*p and is straight to the point, she also runs 'clinics' every so often for people to ask specific skincare questions.

Saying that I really do fancy one of those oxygen facials however at £60 a pop I think that will be waiting a while :rotfl:

You know what, on my quest (that I have been on for the last few months or so since turning 40) you talk the most sense. Thank you. I hadn't even thought of that x
