I thought it was illegal to open someone elses mail? just write return to sender, not known at this address on all further mail and pop it back in the post box.

    Not quite.

Only if intending to act to the persons detriment.

You can also open mail wrongly delivered to you if you have reasonable cause to do so. I'd say it was reasonable in ops case.

So, having spoken to the company in question I was put through to a lady who seemed to be aware of the matter. She informed me that the matter had been resolved and that she took care of it. I was assured I would get no more correspondence and got her name for reference. She advised that if I continued to receive mail then to speak to her.

Following this I rang the court who told me that according to their records the case was still outstanding. They did, however, note that it can take time for paperwork etc to come through and forthings to be updated. My call was also logged on the case file.

Hopefully that actually is the end of the matter but I'm not convinced it will be.

Do not open other peoples letters !
Credit and debts are based upon the person.
If it is not your name it is neither your letter or your problem.
All you will get by sticking your nose in is a boat load of trouble.
To a debt collector, a hit is a hit and you are lying.
Do yourself a favour, do not open any more, write in on the letters
NO PERSONS AT THIS ADDRESS :
    RETURN TO SENDER
    Be happy...;)

You don't have to prove anything...........................

I strongly disagree. By opening the letters, OP has got a handle on what is happening, seen a court case come on the horizon and been able to come on here for advice including on how to deal with bailiffs. By continuing to open letters, OP would know whether to expect bailiffs.

If it comes through your door, it is your call on how to deal with it and you get a good oversight of what may come your way. I recommend it.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

I'm sure that people who have outstanding debts that they are being chased for would never do this in which case the debt collectors will take it at face value and cease sending the letters.

Meanwhile, in the real world, the OP has done exactly the right thing by opening the letters and contacting the company concerned.

Stop telephoning, that is a casual method of communication and you can't later prove what was said. Send a recorded delivery letter to the court and to the company.
