Hello,
DD's 8GB ipod touch has been patiently prompting for it to be upgraded to iOS6 for yonks. Initially I put off doing it until any bugs etc were ironed out, but it's now time to do it.
First problem appears to be that the upgrade needs around 2.5GB of space - space which is not available right now doe to the apps, vids, music etc she has on it. Not being over familiar with iPods, how do I go about clearing enough space for this upgrade?
Is a synch with itunes enough, or should I back everything up externally too?
Can a backup be done using Windows Explorer, and if so, what folders etc do I need to copy?
Does the iPod need to be connected to itunes for the update to work?
If so, does it have to be the same PC it usually synchs with, or could I connect it to my PC? (as DD can't possibly live without her laptop for more than 30 seconds!)
Anything else I need to know?
Sorry for so many questions, but as you can imagine, my life won't be worth living if this upgrade goes belly up or it results in the loss of her data

Perhaps I've just been lucky but I've never made space or backed up, I just click on update now or whatever it says and it downloads and installs via wifi. I presume the update would stop and say not enough space if that was the case.
To make doubly sure, before you start, connect to itunes and click backup which will back up your files onto that pc. Then if something does go wrong at least you can restore to how it was. There is no way of doing it with Windows Explorer.0 -

You're making it all far more complex than it needs to be. The space is required if you're doing an over-the-air upgrade, where the iPod downloads the code itself and then does the upgrade, without being plugged into a computer. Introduced in iOS 5, more for the use-case of iPads than iPods.
Just plug it into the computer its library is on, look in iTunes, hit the button (which doesn't need extra space), wait five minutes, done.0 -
