Charlie I left the switch at the wall on next to the water tank. Well there is two.

One has a boost with a dial, a switch from off and timed.

Two is a plain wall switch.

I don't know which does which.

I have two switches, one is for overnight economy 7 (plain switch) and the other is for a boost during the day if needed (but no dial on mine).

I have been assured there is no debt on the meter, I just topped up another £10.00 and turned off the water and the heating so will monitor usage over the next couple of days.

Don't accept another persons assurance, check to see of there is any debt yourself, see here how to do it if you're not sure

    It's someone else's fault.

Go through the complaint's process about the failure for your provider to switch. I wasn't aware that suppliers could prevent switching.

Good info here, including advice on switching from pre paid meters.

Timed means your immersion heater will come on for a few hours during the night to give you a full tank of water. Boost will put it on for an hour and will give you about a third of a tank. See my previous post - if the meter clock is at the wrong time this means you will be paying up to 3 times more than you should for your water heating.

Guys with the heaters and water off I had about £11.53 last night around 11pm and used the PC, a 400watt small heater and phone charger until about 1am and then went to bed.

My phone was charging all night.

My balance is showing around £11.20 now. Is that more normal?

Yes, it is. In fact if you were using a 400watt heater I'm surprised that you used so little.

400 watt heater would cost about 15p every two and a half hours assuming your rat is around 15p per KWh so sounds about right - remember the standing charge comes off as a lump - probably weekly

Just a note about the switching problem. There are some meter types that cannot be switched - in central Scotland comfort plus for examle. These meters are called different things in different areas but are always identified by 3 rates - day rate, night rate and boost rate - if you have 3 meter readings then you re stuffed - you cant switch - if you have a two rate meter which is economy 7 then you can switch.
