Should I consider Grangetown Cardiff?

Options
Hi, I'm looking to move into a rented house in Cardiff. I moved to Cardiff 4 years ago and have been living in Maindy. I like the area but would like to live either closer to the city centre or the bay where I work. I'm a bit fed up of students now so want to avoid Cathays / Roath.
I went to see a 2 bed house yesterday in Canton and it was great, I loved the shops and all the buzz but when I went to pay the agency fee someone had beaten me to it.
This morning I went to see a house in Grangetown, it was much cheaper and had three bedrooms. The only thing was the area, outside the house some guy was effing and blinding walking down the street, there was an emaciated dog shuffling along and no shops. The agent who showed us around told us it was definitely 'up and coming' and there was no trouble and min crime (it was the city centre end of Grangetown).
When I got home I googled Grangetown and have read that its not a nice area and that the multicultural community have kicked and thrown things at dogs which I can't have as I have a dog.
I've been sent details of another house in the area which is absolutely perfect inside and is the next street across from the one I viewed this morning.
What I want to know is, is the city centre end of Grangetown a bad area? Would I be ok walking my dog at night? I know Grangetown covers a fairly large area and the posts I've read could be referring to other parts?

I have lived in Grangetown for 20 years, all my adult life, there are places in grangetown i would not live in, but lots of nice streets with friendly people (regardless of race!).
If you would like to pm me with regards to specific streets/questions i would be happy to answer.

I'd live in City Cardens, Carlton gdns, Avondale cres/walk, Taff embankment (certain parts) and a few streets in between.

If it's Stafford Road i wouldn't bother, but then i guess it depends on my circumstances as a parent i wouldn't as a single person i may do

I lived off Stafford Road for many years as a single person. Was far far safer walking home from town in the early hours than I had been in the leafy village I grew up in. Has neighbours that looked out for me and knew all the shop keepers etc. Even worked in The Cornwall for a bit.

Sold up in 2005. Has it really changed so much since then?

  • I personally wouldn't recommend grange town, it's cheaper for a reason! I lived in the bay for a while and I don't want to sound snobby but after driving through it everyday I can say I would never want to live there. I lived in Canton for a year and loved it and later moved to Splott for financial reasons and found it actually not bad despite reputations and also really handy for getting to the centre and pretty decent...I would say Splott is more up and coming then Grangetown!

Grangetown has changed massively, the community spirit has disappeared. Not like it used to be - I really miss it :(

Walking home from town - I wouldn't, my friend was knifed (for fun) under the Avana bridge. Bomb patch has been made prettier, the Alexandra flats have gone and there is some new HA housing in it's place.

    That's a real shame. :(
