Self employed and moving to Australia info

Hi everyone,
I'm currently self employed (graphic design/printing), and I am considering emigrating to Australia.
My sister is living out there and has done for a while on a working visa, and now has sponsorship at a hospital for 4yrs as a nurse.
My question is; how can I move to Australia and carry on with my business, I know there is a market for it, but not sure if it's allowed?
I've tried searching online, but I just can't seem to find a specific answer.
Any help would be appreciated.

try asking on https://www.britishexpats.com for more "expert" help.

what type of visa you get will depend on your age, experience etc, is it on the SOL? Or how much money you have to invest if in business etc..0 -

Thanks very much for the links.
I am just about to graduate from University in a degree that is on the SOL list, but I don't have experience working in the field as such.
I'm 29yrs old, I am hoping to have £20,000 by the time I apply, but I think they want 1.5million or something for the investment Visa.
I'll have a look on the links you both gave, thanks!

If it is on the SOL, I would get the required experience and go then..
Very jealous, am too old soon for a visa, and not got 1.5 mill either!0 -
You could easily get a working holiday visa but it is not meant to be used in pursuance of your main career. That said, if your business model were online and your income paid to the UK you may be able to do as much or little other work as required to fulfill the needs of that visa. If and when you fulfill the work visa requirement you can leave Aus, get the visa and go back. Just remember to have fun seeing the sites so you fulfill the holiday partLife is like a box of chocolates - drop it and the soft centres splash everywhere0

You could also have a look at getting one of the design and print agencies to sponsor you. I have dealt with a lot of the Sydney and Melbourne based ones and they have a dire shortage of your skill set ..and in a lot of cases a lot of English staff already.0

Do not under any circumstances do this. Incredibly foolish advice. Australian immigration are not stupid and have seen every scenario before. Fall foul of them and you can be banned from even applying for a holiday visa for three years.
Get yourself a good Mara registered immigration agent and apply above board.

This visa allows you to:- establish a new or develop an existing business in Australia (the Business Innovation stream)
- make a designated investment with an Australian state or territory government (the Investor stream)
- invest at least AUD5 million in Australia (the Significant Investor stream).

that path appears to be closed..0

Business visa information here http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/business/160/ - this will allow you to establish a new or existing business in Australia, travel in and out of Australia any number of times as long as the visa is valid, have your family accompany you to Australia (They will have access to work and study rights), establish a pathway to permanent residence. This visa is for business owners from overseas who intend to own a business in Australia, and are less than 45 years of age.
Also ask questions on British Expats - someone provided the link above.
I agree with this 100 percent.. Apply for the right visa, do not attempt to pull the wool over the immigration depts eyes.. Or you run the very real risk of being deported and receiving an exclusion order banning you from Australia.
Look at in addition to moving as a business owner at the design agencies as they are crying out for graphic designers and would help by sponsoring you and paying the immigration fees etc.. As some of the visas are not cheap. mine cost between the different stages about 4k all on and it was one of the cheaper ones.
I disagree if you decide to go down the business route that you need agent .. I did mine myself .. Told my first visa would take 6 month it was approved in 6 days ! The next two stagesfor provisional to perm resident 2 stage visa ( initial one then final perm one 2 years later) each took about 4 to 6 weeks to come through but these wer eon shore visas so I already had the right to live and work in Aus until the applications were decided.
I read all the documents, and notes attached to the forms , completed them supplying supporting info foreverything that reasonably added to the applications all organized in neat sections ( 3 a4 lever arch files for the first application) I got no queries or questions form immigration because all the info was provided correctly and organized correctly. If you are comfortable with forms and can put reports together I would argue that an agent is not really necessary and they are costly for a process that is designed not to need an agent.
I know of design agencies wheree over 50 percent of staff are expats so they are very open to hiring overseas staff, so you would nt I think have too much trouble finding a design agency willing to sponsor you.
A lot are really short staffed at the moment and struggling to fill positions.0 -
Thank you so much for the replies!
My degree is in commercial management, not graphic design, but my business is all graphic design and I'm good at it.. not sure if that would be good enough to secure a job.
Thanks for the info about a working visa too, I honestly was considering going out there and just looking for work and seeing what I could find, but I never knew it was such a massive no-no!
I've got a lot to consider, but I think looking at being sponsored would be the best route.
I shall look at all the links etc. and try and work out a plan now.
Thanks again!0
