  • Thanks for the suggestion. When watching Netflix, I do get a little bit of buffering/delay. Can still watch it, but not perfect.

I'm hoping this advice is still in date but we used to use our Youview box as an ordinary recorder. We bought ours through BT originally but apparently you can use it with any ISP and don't need a BT TV subscription. I'm taking mine round my mum's at the weekend - I think she has Plusnet - to see if I can set it up for her as we've had sky for a few years now.

Thanks very much. So for 2 rooms, we are looking at £210 for the Humax HDR-1100S and another £79 for the 2nd room. Unless there may be better deals.

I am pretty sure we don't have Sky Q.

You're aware that you would only be able to pause, record and rewind Live TV from one room in that scenario? (using the HDR-1100S)

If you have a smart TV,you should be able to watch Netflix on there.
    Check the tv app store.

Youview is mainly a Freeview receiver. In order to use it, the OP would require a terrestrial TV aerial and effective reception. They haven't stated whether they have this or not, and seem to be looking for a satellite solution.

Please can anyone advise me. We are stopping Sky as too expensive. We use it in rooms, and neither of our TVs is a smart TV. Also we live in the country with no cable, and not very fast broadband.

I would like to be able to record programmes from, say ITV3, and also to pause if possible. I am not sure of best option for us? Should we both buy a Humax, or will one work in rooms watching different programmes.

I see that John Lewis have Humax HB-1100S Smart Freesat HD Digital TV Receiver with Built-in Wi-Fi for £79. Would this be OK?

I have Netflix via my son, and watch it on my laptop.

I have tried to find answer myself, but am defeated!! Thanks :)

Although it doesn't address your wish to record TV channels, when you cancel your Sky TV subscription , the Sky box should continue to work as a FTV/FTA ( free to view/free to air) satellite receiver , much like a Freesat box, so this possibly could be used for the second TV , and you only need one new FreeSat + box (capable of recording) for the 'main' TV

Back up a minute. Why do you want to record specifically?

What I suggest is take a look at your TV's and see if you can install a chromecast to them. Then pick up a cheap tablet and download the ITV player, all 4, iplayer. You can then catch up with programmes from those channels and 'cast' to your tv. If you want to do this on two TVs at the same time, you will need to buy 2 chromecasts and two cheap tablets (you could use cheap phones but tablets are just easier due to size imo).

Another alternative would be to connect your laptop to your TV to watch your netflix etc.

At the moment your outlay for a set top box plus the recorder is £289 based on a 1tb recorder. However, if you went for 2 x 500gb recorders that would cost you £360 and still give you 1tb of recording capacity. If budget allows, I'd be inclined to suggest 2 x 500gb recording boxes as it is £71 more (less cost of hard drive) and gives you the option of recording 4 channels at once in the household.

If the OP has a buffering issue with Netflix (post#6) then I would think that running two streaming devices would not be viable.
