googlemail access

this problem is driving me nuts!

I have an HTC smartphone and I am trying to buy a 62p game (Wreckit Ralph) to play with my grand daughter who I took to see the film

I can get to the point of 'accept terms and buy', but it wants a password for a googlemail account. I didn't set one up and don't use one, I have absolutely no idea what a password might be

have gone online and put in the googlemail address I have been 'assigned' and 'forgot password', but it asks me unanswerable questions, like, what was the last password used successfully to access the account, when did I set it up, and what is an email address that I send mail to from it.

I can't answer these questions as I haven't set up an email account with them, and because it won't accept a blank response, and a guess gets an email saying I can't give enough information, I am just going round in circles

I have tried finding a place on the phone to change the emails address to the one I DO use, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to do that. I have even tried to delete the email addr on the phone, but it says that applications use it, and I'm not allowed to delete it. Am now completely out of ideas

Anyone know how to get round this?

All I want is a 62p game!

(and prob to buy some other cheap apps at some point too)

As far as I can tell you need a Google email account for this. An account associated with a non-Google email address simply will not work for some reason.

To add Gmail to an existing account, follow these instructions.

Have you Googled for 'wreck it ralph android game download' (for example) - there are other places to get android games from apart from Google Play.

Just create a google email account specifically for your phone (and any future android device you may get) then use that to buy the app.

You don't have to use it as an actual email address to talk to people or anything like that.

I've got a similar thing to try to sort out with my DDs new phone - when it started up the very first time it asks for a googlemail/gmail address, and that becomes the primary email account. Changing it isn't completely straightforward.

One option seems to be doing a factory reset on the phone, or it might be possible to clear data which would be less drastic. I have been looking at this thread

I haven't tried doing it myself yet though!

[Edited to say - just did it - couldn't work out how to do the clear data option so did a factory reset. The contacts were saved on the SIM so we could get those back, but we lost the text messages and music from the phone. Only do it if you are sure you want to!]

Before you do anything on your phone, the first step is to set up a new (free) gmail account, and make sure you keep a note of all the information like username and a password hint for yourself to make sure you don't forget in the future! Oh, and if you aren't going to use it regularly as a mail account, it is probably safest to set it to automatically forward mail to your main email account so you dont miss any important messages

    thanks for your help people

I had previously ordered an iPad which arrived this morning and I have successfully loaded Wreckit Ralph on it for my grand daughter - she will love it

I'll leave the google mail problem on my phone for another day
