Aldi Medion Laptop - Should I Buy It?

Options
Last year I made the stupid mistake of buying a laptop when I didnt have a clue what I was doing. I bought an Acer Travel Mate 2420, basically because it was cheap. I'm having real problems with it as I am a heavy user and I need to multi task due to my job. It is very slow all the time, keeps freezing and crashing. I have tried all the remedial stuff like disk clean ups, defrags, deleting old programs etc and I've just come to the conclusion its unfit for purpose

So I have decided to take the plunge and buy a new one, but still I know nothing. I need something fast, with a quality processor and a good amount of memory and something with good battery life for when I am at clients houses.

I have spotted one in aldi but the spec is so Alien to me I don't know whether to buy it. Would someone be kind enough to have a look and tell me if its worth the money and will do what I want it to?

Thanks in advance

If your existing laptop has less than 257MB of ram, then that may be your issue. https://www.crucial.com/uk

Restoring the laptop software to factory state might also be of benefit. You shouldn't need to replace it after a year.

There are several other threads about the aldi laptop, try a search for aldi or medion.

Personally I'd get a Dell, same spec, but cheaper.

Found it. I have 1.50 MHZ intel celeron (r) M processor
    248MB RAM
    40 g hard drive split into 2

    Is this bad or OK?

I suspect it has something to do with the slowness, adding another 256MB from crucial will probably make a vast improvement to the speed, and is much cheaper than a new PC.. run the scanner on the crucial website.

I agree, 1.5GHz CPU and 40GB hard drive are way enough. If you're going to trash it, I'll come and dispose of it for you :p
Although you could get around with a trimmed down WinXP with 256MB, I'd suggest a RAM upgrade as well. Thing is, if you have 2x128MB at this time, you'll have to get rid of both sticks and get 2 new ones :(

Can anyone comment on the performance of the processor on the aldi laptop?

Lisa I have an Acer Travelmate with a lower spec than yours (3 years old).

It works completely fine for what you 'need' it for so I'd first suggest running the following programs:

    1. Stinger.exe
    2. Adaware
    3. Spybot Search & Destroy.

I'd also recommend you just keep Office and Trigold on it if you can. The laptop should be used as a tool while on the road. You have a PC as well don't you?

For the progarms I guess you are running, what should cope with a added 256 memory

The Aldi one looks good , some might say a bit overloaded with extras for business use .

Personally I would stick to Compaq, Dell or Sony , and check quoted battery life , then half it.

Consider a spare battery, or a car invertor ( allows charging whilst on teh road)
