System Restore Problem

In an attempt to send a fax through my computer I followed the instructions in "help & support" for Windows XP. I loaded the recovery disc and "unticked" everything except the fax element. I now find that both Internet Explorer & Outlook Express have disappeared. Other things might have also gone but I've yet to notice. To rectify this I tried System Restore. I've tried around a dozen dates but it's not effective.
Please can someone offer some advice to sort out this problem. Thanks.

Did you read this part in "Help & Support"? -
Before you can send a fax with Windows Fax and Scan, your computer must be equipped with a fax modem or connected to a fax server.
Did you have either of these connected? Sorry if you have already done that, but I am concerned about what you "unticked". I run Windows 7, and have almost forgotten XP but will look up what I can to help.
Meanwhile, I suggest you look for some more expert help here:

I know, it is Win7, but there are some very accomplished experts there who will help you, probabaly with a Tutorial to download and work through.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

If you used the add and remove Windows components then when you UNTICKED the items you UNINSTALLED the items, suggest go back and re-tick the items you are missing and see what happens.
XP Control panel - Add and remove programs - click on add and remove Windows components - re-tick your missing items.
In your desperation to get them back by tring lots of updates - you "could" have made your situation worse unfortunately"0 -

Beaten to it! There are times when Microsoft products do pleasantly surprise me. Windows XP is a mature product and remarkably robust in some aspects.
