I have only had the car a few months but it was going in for a service now and I brought it up with mechanic then. It had a oil change in October0

If its just noisy on start up they all do that. Mine sounded like a diesel on a cold start, quietened down when it was up to temp and was otherwise fine! Well, apart from the unrelated head gasket failure.
Mine is noisy when it was starting and accelerating in low gears even when warm...0 -

If you stick Slick 50 in your oil, it will protect the engine when thats happening. Its a one off treatment and should last the lifetime of your car.
I have never heard of slick50 any negative points in using it?0 -
rover 25 45 upto 1.8 litre have cam lobe problems resulting from noisy hydraulic lifters, basically when the pair meet metal to metal the lobes on the cams desintergrate throwing metal swarf and shards into the engine. you mechanic should be looking at the flsuhed oil for these shards and deciding to investigate by removing rocker cover and looking for cam lobe failure. see my here
this damage is caused by what your hearing in your engine bay.
