I definitely second the fancy rat forum, tons of knowledgeable people. A few days lurking and you'll be really well prepared.

Sawdust is a no no, I used carefresh (made from recycled paper) because waiting in for deliveries from online was awkward for me and its available at P@H. There are loads of options though.

Luckily I've only ever had one rat that had respiratory problems, most of mine died of tumours, but in their old age.

All the one's ive rescued, from centers, have had resp problems. Two with PTs, one with bone disease & multiple mammary tumors! Two, though have nothing, and never have :D

I point out the money, because 99% of people don't realize how much rats do cost, maybe not for the first year or so of their life, but i've found, as they get older, they get lots of problems, maybe not all, but most, and owning rats myself, i can't imagen leaving my rats untreated, or not having the money to get them help.
