I am an engineer and whilst I don't denigrate people who service equipment they most definitely are not engineers

Well, I have a document issued by the UK CAA which states that I am an engineer, and every single government in the EU issues similar documents, which is why the correct term is Licenced aircraft engineer, or LAE for short.

This qualification also entitles me to countersign UK passport applications (something which I have done on a couple of occasions), and the requirements to do this are
    "engineer (with professional qualifications)"

so who you think are engineers differs greatly with the government stance on this.
I suggest you look up the definition of engineer
    Okay.
A person who designs, builds, or maintains engines, machines, or public works.
One who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering.

No doubt there are just as many sites that state an engineer must be engaged in design work, but that doesn't mean those sites are any more correct than the ones above.

That's not really saying much. The criteria to countersign a passport is not that stringent!

TBH I think the OP would be better asking on diynot.com in the plumbing section, they have loads of RGI's there and they may be able to help find a replacement.

EDIT: I misread the OP - ignore this comment.

The OP has already proven that a fault with the fan damaged the PCB.

The customer is lucky to find such a nice engineer who went to a lot of effort to fix it. We had a faulty heat exchanger on a 7 year old boiler and discovered the part was obselete, so had to get a new boiler!

I'd send the customer a letter before action telling him to pay, or offer to remove the parts you fitted, but point out he'd then need a new boiler.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Just because people routinely use a word incorrectly doesn't make it correct. I suggest you look up the definition of engineer.

Definitions of words are changing all the time and this has probably happened since humans started communicating with each other.
Just because the current definition is different to its original interpretation doesn't mean that what is now used is wrong.

If a few decades ago, my grandparents were told that 2 gay people were getting married, they would have assumed that it would be a cheerful & jolly man and woman getting married and that the ceremony would be conducted by a male priest.
Nowadays it could be two men or two women marrying each other with the ceremony conducted by a woman.
