Voucher contradiction, says in large print(show voucher on mobile)

Had a voucher for a free burger with a drink at a pub, the person refused to accept it as despite in very large font saying to show your mobile OR hand in voucher in the small print it says to hand voucher to staff so they did not accept this.
Is this a case of managements discresion or did they mess up?
