Site only shows status of current MOT certificate.

There's a link on the right-hand side of the page to check the history. :)

I clicked on the link on the right-hand side, but it was unable to provide the results. Here's the message I got instead.

Error: We are unable to process your request because of one of the following reasons:

the test number does not exist.
the document number from the V5C registration certificate does not exist or does not match the vehicle registration mark.

Please check your documents and enter the correct information.

It could simply be that the original speedometer, odometer etc was faulty and it has been replaced with one from another vehicle which shows a lower reading than the original one.

It could be that the MOT garage made a mistake when they entered the last MOT

I believe new MOT certificates show you some previous miles but as above should probably be available online too.
  • a low miler like this there should be a FSH with it, what does this say? and what mileages was these services completed at.

    A. the MOT station could have entered the incorrect mileage.
A.a if this had been the case the advert would stipulate the correct mileage as the advert would pre date the MOT upon purchase.

B.the dealer has an obligation to check to the best of their knowladge that the odemeter reading is as accurate as it displays.
B.b a sticker on the odemeter lense such as a disclaimer does not waive this obligation.

C.the dealer/trader/private seller has an obligation to advertise the car as accurately as they can and to the best of their knowladge.
C.c if the seller fails to comform to the above knowingly not disclosing key information as the description to influence a buyers decision to purchase, the purchaser (within a certain time frame) can reject formerly the vehicle under the sales of goods act.

D.you must inform the dealer at the very first opertunity of the defect/descrepancy arising, this is fair under the eyes of law to alow the seller to correct the issue, you are bound by the terms and conditions of the contract of sale where legally binding, such as the terms and conditions of sale states that you are to return the vehicle with any defect to the seller or its authorised repairers to inspect the vehicle, no matter how far away you live or take temporary residence you will not be authorised to take the vehicle to your own mechanic without first getting authrorisation in writing from the seller, if the seller breaks the terms of the contract of sale by refusal to alow to return the vehicle to their repairers or property then you are allowed to have the vehicle inspected (not repaired) by a party of your choosing that will compile a complete and honest inspection report that you could submit to a small claims or magistrate court in such an event you would have no option but to sue the seller.

does this odometer reading defect affect value and saleablity of the vehicle, yes it does, it will flag out on any HPI report that is linked to the vosa database as a mileage discrepancy, do you have to disclose the defect, yes you would because the mileage is not genuin and thus will not be as described in your advert if you choose to withhold such unformation, would it influence the sale of the vehicle if you withheld the information possibly as the mileage is lower than most in its price and age range.

Thanks again atrixblue for the information.

What concerns me regarding (D) in your info, is that if it is a clocked odometer, it's not something that they can fix, or would not be acceptable to my partner. If is it a replacement odometer (as someone else suggested), then it's still not acceptable from my partner's point of view. He was only interested in a low mileage car.

I understand that, by law, the dealer must be given the chance to inspect the car. However, they are hardly going to come up with an independent opinion. I suspect a strong connection with the MOT centre too.

My partner is going to phone them soon, and demand a refund for the car, and to get his old car back from them. As the car has been mis-sold (regardless of the reasons for the discrepancy) I think this is reasonable. I understand that we'll probably have to make another journey there, but is it not fair for them to reimburse us our expenses? They might be persuaded if we offer not to report them to trading standards etc.

    Thanks again.

I remember, when I did mine I kept putting the wrong number in and it took me ages to get it right. You'll get there in the end, I did, and I now have a record of all the MOT's for my car, which I've stuck in my history file.

Thanks, but the number I entered was definitely correct. However, I managed to get the results by entering the latest MOT test number instead. The results match the information I have on the latest MOT certificate (which lists the last four odometer readings).

The one we were presented with also shows the last four readings, which is how we spotted the discrepancy.
