is it my fault the meter is blank?
We moved into our brand new build house last june. We were told on the day we moved in that the electricity meter was broken, they put it on one of their forms for work needing doing and we signed it along with one of their staff. The site manager said the house builder would pay the electricity until the meter was fixed. We were also told our gas was supplied from british gas and electricity from Powergen, and that they would send us a bill shortly.
I phoned powergen myself to set up the account the first week, they were admant that they were not suppling us with electricity - they new the estate existed and said they were suppling other houses in the street but definately not us.
We received nothing from powergen or british gas until today. I got a bill from Powergen for the gas and the electric for £1200, but £22 is for electricity for the year and £1170 is for gas. I've read the gas meter and its about a quarter of their estimated reading. But are we liable for the electricity because it obviously isn't right at £22? what a nightmare
all help appreciated

What was the reading on the new meter when it was fitted? Does it tie up with your bill? And is the current reading correct or estimated?0

When a new estate is built, the builders decide upon the suppliers for the gas and elec, It's highly unlikely that the builders for your estate would have contacts with different suppliers for the electric, if you contact the elec distributors in your area they will be able to give you a contact no for MPAS who will confirm the the suppliers of your electric, from when you bought the prop to the present day. If it is powergen, and you notified them off the broken meter last june then they let you down by not having the meter exhange within the first 2 weeks. Therefore I doubt they would be in a position to force you into paying for any electric that you have used. (other than the standing charge) Whoever your supplier is they would probably estimate how much you have used in the past by what you use in the future. But still considering that no other supplier has contacted you, I double that any of them wouldn't quosh passed usage.
As for your gas, again powergen should be able to give you a contact no ( I think it's national grid/Transco) who will confirm who your gas suppliers have been from day 1. If it is powergen, you only have give them your current read and they will amend your gas bill accordingly. But do check with National Grid as there is a possibility that you have gas 2 gas suppliers, seeing as your builders originally confirm B Gas as you supplier for it then to turn out that powergen are without you committing to a contract.
I wish you well with this tricky one,0
