Disk partitions and Windows 7 SP1

Hi all

Two questions in one post (saves space on the thread ;))
First one:-
I've partitioned my main drive into two (C: and D: ). I want to reduce the C: drive and expand D:
I can reduce C: without any problems using the relevant Computer Management options but it leaves a gap between C: and D: as unallocated. I wanted to expand D: to use that extra space but I don't have that option.
Anyone any ideas how to sort this one?

Second one:-
I'm trying to install SP1 for Windows 7 Home Premium but it keeps giving me an error (800B0100). I tried the automated fixit as advised by the help file but it came up with two things it could fix. One of them was a database of some description (can't remember the exact name and I'm at work now so can't check) and anther error.
I know this one's a bit vague, but does anyone have any ideas?

Use a program designed to move partitions, such as the bootable ISO GPartEd or EaseUS Partition Manager. Both work well, and both are free. Might take an hour or much more, because it has to move lots of data around.

The alternative is to back up the D: partition, delete the partition, reallocate the partition at the correct size (will be the default, probably), and restore back your data.

Yes, your second question is very vague, and you don't say whether you allowed the FixIt to fix it.

Closed - Yeah, but I can move it to an external drive if necessary.

John - That might be the best idea, I'll see what I can do tonight.
As for the second question, the fixit program from Microsoft gave me the two errors and it still won't install.

Whilst you can combine/resize partitions, it's cleaner/safer to move the data to c or external, delete the d partition, recreate and format the big d: in the unallocated space, and copy data back

    Thanks for that.
    I'll do that later then.

Any idea on the SP1 install problem (I know the question was a bit vague)?

if you've got Hiren's bootcd, use Partition Wizard on there to sort that problem :)

for SP1, download the stand-alone file and run it, sometimes takes a couple of goes to get it done :(

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

A straight seach on the error number gives http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/windows-update-error-800b0100 which specifies the problem and offers something that may fix it.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure when I resized my own partitions I just used the built in windows disk management tools - it offered an option to expand the D partition. Could be wrong as it was a while ago and I do have several partition moving tools in my arsenal.

GJ - I do have that, I'll boot from that and see what's what. I did try using the built-in "thingy" under Computer Management but it wouldn't let me expand D: (I assume because the unallocated space was the wrong side of the rest?)?

Kwikbreaks - I tried the options in there but still no joy. The readiness tool fixed a few errors but left me with 2 that it couldn't deal with.

I'll try the tool again tonight and post back with a bit more of a detailed description of the errors.

I always prefer to use a boot disk/live cd to rejig partitions.
I find the graphical bar on GParted gives a good visual of what you're trying to achieve.

I've always made sure everything is backed up, but so far, never had a mishap, but have always treble checked what I'm doing.

If you'd got your Xboot flash drive sorted, :), you could have GParted instantly to hand. (it's on mine :p).

+1 for downloading the standalone SP1
    Move along, nothing to see.

    Hi Spud

I didn't manage to get the XBoot pendrive to work :( so they're all on separate CDs.

I'll have a look at the GParted program on Hirens and see if I can figure it out from there (I'll back everything up before I start).

I've just searched the Microsoft website for the right download but there's quite a few to choose from and I don't want to get the wrong one.
