Had a prang in rental car - will this affect my own personal car insurance?

Hi,
I had an accident in a rental car the other month and police have simply stated that I 'lost control' when i ploughed into lamp post. Essentially I swerved to avoid oncoming truck. No witnesses and they have no other evidence to suggest there was anyone else involved. Truck did not stop.
Luckily I had full cover taken out with the rental car company so hopefully should not be liable to anything (i.e. the usual 600-800 excess). Still waiting to hear back from their insurance folk.
However, as my own car insurance is up for renewal shortly (3months time), I notice that moneysupermaket has the question of "Have you had any motor insurance claims or incidents in the last 5 years?". To which I would say 'no' to the insurance claim, an I have not claimed on my own insurance. Of course I have been involved in an 'incident' so I would answer 'yes'. Yet, I have not claimed on my own insurance, but will be penalised for answering yes to the amount of approx 100pounds.
Seems a bit unfair, but I guess they now deem me to be more accident prone...even though I was not at fault.
Should i already contact my current insurance company now to say thatI had a prang (even though i am not claiming on this policy)?
Your views please!

Tell them when you renew - it probably won't make any difference.0

You have made a fault claim (from the hire car insurance)
You do need to inform your own insurer about this.
You also need to disclose this claim to other insurers you approach for quotes as part of your history for the next 3/5 years depending the length of history required.0 -
Once you have decided on an insurer, do dummy quotes with and without the accident. If it's more, then theoretically you can claim the extra cost (for 3-5 years) from the party at fault. But expect a fight. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.
We belong to the Earth0 -

Difficult to claim from a truck that didn't stop though0
