Web site development

Options
I am looking for advice on developing a web site myself (I'm a complete novice, but I have a reasonable amount of time on my hands)

One person suggested Dreamweaver, but another said it was outdated (but they didn't offer an alternative)?

Any suggestions/advice welcome.

Thanks in advance,

D9

It really depends what you are looking for.

If you want a basic site and to avoid templates then Dreamweaver may well serve you.

However, if you want anything more than a static site then you will need to look elsewhere.

Personally, I would suggest looking at Wordpress, to see if that can do what you need.
  • Wordpress isn't really what I am looking for.

It's (nearly) as much about the learning process as the final goal.

A static site may suffice for now, but I may need more in the future.

Where else would you look then?

Learning how a WordPress site goes together could be a very useful learning experience, I wouldn't write it off - there are hundreds of ways to use them!

You won't learn much about web development from Dreamweaver, unless you plan to view the HTML afterwards to see how everything is produced. It also won't be preparing you for the future, as you will eventually have to learn a scripting language such as ASP or PHP, which will be more difficult if you don't have the basic HTML knowledge.

With Wordpress, at least there are modules available to do just about anything you want.
  • If you know html coding notepad is perfect. It is what I use. I don't have anything fancy on my site just text and pictures.

If you want to get a basic website out there right now and learn later, Dreamweaver would be fine.
  • Thanks everyone, some food for thought there.

You can learn a massive amount about web development using DW, I did. To do so you must be prepared to use it in code view as well as in design view. You did not say if it was your intention to take your learning further or if you just want to build a single website?

If it is a single website then Wordpress would probably be your best bet considering it is effectively free while DW CS6 costs around £250.

As the op is a complete beginner and may decide not to progress much with it after a taster, why not try the free version of Microsoft Expression? I know its not great by any stretch but its free and does plenty enough for the op to have a go...
