PAYG meter to Monthly Direct Debit

I am currently paying around £120-£150 a month on gas to heat the 3 bedroom house I am have just moved in to, I don't know if the tariff is just high or there is a fault but I have mentioned this to the landlord and asked if the cost of switching to a monthly meter would be covered by him or not.

He is sending someone out to do our annual gas safety check tomorrow but in the meantime advised me that there shouldnt be a cost for changing, I have already spoke to our current supplier (southern electric) and there is, £53 i think it was.

He then advised me to speak to another supplier, I presume this would work similar to sky/virgin where they would want my custom enough to offer a free exchange?

My question being, who is the best and who should I avoid, who has the best energy tariff etc... I am only 26, never had to deal with this before and haven't got a clue!

Thanks.

Btw, I think the charge made by SSE would be £52 ;)
