Budgeting for first home & family

Hi everyone. I've recently had a big change in my life - relationship of 13 years ended and i'm back living with parents. Luckily, i have a good job and will still be able to buy my first home this year (was previously house hunting with my ex).
My dilemma is do i put a bigger deposit down so i pay less on my mortgage each month, or should i keep quite a bit of money back for more savings as my hope within the next 2 years is to adopt a child? This will be as a single adopter, so i need my finances to be secure.
Thanks for any advice. I'm used to budgeting as a couple, although i was the higher earner by far, so this is all new to me.
