Car insurance - missold?/cooling off period?

See my post below. Am fuming because we feel we have been missold a car insurance policy.

We searched via confused.com, answered yes to the 'are you main driver of another car' and said we have 2 years No Claims bonus (we genuinely did not realise that since we have not yet sold the other car - which 2.5 yrs NCB is being applied to, we should have said NONE).

Now it has been explained to us that we should have said NONE we feel that we were missold the policy by no fault of our own, and want to cancel (Since they say it is an extra £300 without the NCB, and we know we can do better!!!!!). We are being asked to pay £40 plus pay for the amount of time we 'had' the policy.

My feeling is we didn't have a policy as it would have been null and void in the event of a claim, and we don't owe them anything, least of all £40. Oh and tomorrow is the 14th day after policy issued (bought over internet with a Mastercard).

My other half has already advised them he will not be paying any charges and we await their cancellation pack in the post.

I am in the same boat as you.. I was under the impression that the NCB discount can be used with 2 vehicles. I made a policy with tesco, under my dads name with me as second driver. He had 6 years NCB so I put that down, when I should have put 0. They now have charged me: A policy modification fee (£88 I think), they also want the extra money WITH added interest!

I first payed £42 a month, now I am paying £170! Being a student, I am really struggling. You'd think I could just cancel, but they want £391 for that!! My car (first car) is worth £400, so that's not the most ideal situation! lol

Would be interesting to read how other people would deal with this situation. Thanks

I think you two are two of many thousands of people who get cought by this. Although i used to deal with insurance claims complaints i did see a number of these complaints come via my office. Generally the fee's were waived as it was not cost effective to chase them. If you ignore the demand letters it will probably get written off, but DONT take my word for it. Another way would be to write a nicey nicey letter to the CEO and state that it was not clear on their site and that you made a terrible mistake and can they waive the charge. Generally we used to say yes to the nice people.

I agree with that point, perhaps flagging it as a point that it is not clear cut on the site....
.....however, with buying online, they DO post "The Assumptions" before you actually get to quote yourself, which is up to YOU to read. And in general cases, that is what they'll tell you - that you put in the info yourself, the assumptions guide is there for you to read and it's not their fault if you didnt read it.

Have you ever tried reading the assumptions and T&C's?

I have - the quote page times out and you have to start again. The only way is to dump them to your PC and read them later.

Bear in mind that if you had needed to claim you would have expected the Insurers to pay the claim and the Insurers would have paid it as declaring the wrong no claims bonus would not entitle an Insurer to void a policy its just a case of paying the difference in premium.

This can be one of the problems with buying cover on the internet, if you spoke to someone at a brokers or the insurers over the telephone they would normally have realised what you are doing (If they know their job) and would have explained to you the no claims bonus does not transfer across with all Insurers. You could then have shopped elsewhere if their quote was not competitive. When buying on the internet you are putting the data in and the website is not intelligent to spot the possible problem with your no claims bonus (Plus they design the wesbites to ask minimal questions so you can quote quicker).

erm, gents, have you looked at the dates of the original posts? Think they may have sorted their problems by now. ;)
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.
