PCOS and pregnancy first trimester

Sorry if this thread needs moving but I'm looking for anyone who has advice for me?

I have massive cysts on both ovaries, and fistures all over.

Has anyone been given dietry advice to help the bean stick as I know 55% of pregnancy end :( due to PCOS...

I do get crippling pains, and always have but somehow they are worse debilitating when they grip.

I know if the cysts ruptures no harm to bean but alot of pain for me - but thats OK.

any advice xx

You will be closely monitored I am sure for both yours sakes. My friend has PCOS and has 3 healthy children. With her third she had a huge cyst which they were concerned would restrict blood flow and space for the baby and baby wouldn't survive. As it was she went 2 weeks over and has a very large healthy 8 year old now.. There is always hope and when you know what you are dealing with and what to look for it is much safer.

Stay positive.. it sounds like that little one is made of strong stuff!

sorry to hear you have such concerns, the statistics certainly don't help.

only thing i could think to suggest is follow a low gi diet as that's best overall for ladies with PCOS

research suggests that taking metformin during pregnancy will reduce the risk of miscarriage back down to normal levels, however there's very few GPs who are willing to perscribe it during pregnancy as it's not licensed.

have the doctors said your cysts are a problem for your pregnancy or are you just aware that they are there due to your diagnosis?

be thinking of you, hope you'll get a few reassurance scans to help x

thanks both of u for the replies.

I attended a scan yesterday, it was an internal as they couldnt get a clear image. The lady straight out asked how id managed to concieve, she called it a miracle baby LOL

The scan showed up a massive cyst similar to an orange, and well Ive know I get them but I guess as I got pregnant I thought it would have resolved itself. Ive an emergency appointment in 3 weeks after another scan, with a consultant and I'm seeing MW next week.... So plenty of people.

  • Low GI diet is supposed to be best for PCOS.

Have a look at https://www.verity.org at the pregnancy section of the forums, I'm sure someone there will help :)

Hi there - it sounds like they're looking after you with all the appointments, scans etc. I also have PCOS - in fact it was commented on during my 6 week scan last week that they could see that one ovary was covered with them!

I've also heard that metformin can help reduce the likelihood of miscarriage (I'm on it anyway as I have diabetes) so it wouldn't do you any harm to ask about it when you meet with the doctors etc.

In terms of diet etc, I agree that a low GI diet can help (pre-pregnancy I found a low carb diet worked better, but that's not recommended during pregnancy). The verity website is full of useful information.

As far as your large cyst goes, it may disappear on it's own accord without you noticing (I had one that did this) but if it doesn't it doesn't have to cause problems. I have a friend who was told she had a large fibroid in her womb when she went for her first scan, but she's managed to carry two babies (separately!) to term without any bother, so hopefully you'll find the same.

Congratulations on the pregnancy, I know what it's like to have a "miracle" pregnancy - try not to worry (easier said than done) and hopefully with every week that goes by you'll relax more and start to enjoy being pregnant. Good luck.

My best wishes to you, i don't have pcos well i haven't been told i do-i do have random tissue on my ovaries according to my gyne. I have had 6 ruptured cysts one very nearly killed me so i know what it's like living in pain and fear of it happening. From my reading on cysts i've found the following are meant to help shrink them.
Walking is great, plenty of hot baths (although i'd stick to warm for beans sake) a hot water bottle on the affected side, the pregnacy in general will help to rest your ovaries. Good luck, i have 3 children and with all my ovary troubles now i'm surprised they happened.
Stress is no good for you either so relax as much as possible :-)
