Moving out in a DFW style!

Hopefully over the next month or so, me and the boyf will be moving out of his mother's house. :D i know this isnt strictly DFW but my sanity will be regained and that is more than worth it! :j

The problem is.. we're going to have to buy things for the house. Currently all we own is a bed, a mirror and a chair (that my grandma gave me, v.expensive massage chair thing! boyf loves it! )

So, as i see it, we need a lot of stuff, obviously the basics are fridge (possibly cooker, depends where we go), sofa, wardrobe, chest of drawers etc.

I obviously dont want to spend a fortune on this kind of thing and think i need to drag the OH away from buy now, pay later.

Ive never had to buy furniture before, so i need hints and help please people! where do i look for bargains? how do i make sure that its good quality? What have i forgotten that i really will need?

Thank you very muchly!

Well the first thing i thought of what you will need is a washing machine i think this will be an investment in the long run - i know people still use launderettes but if you consider the cost and the cost of getting your washing there it might prove more effective to own one of your own. Although you have chosen a good time with the summer coming up so you wont necessarily need a dryer - just hang things out.

As for buying furniture you can always try the local papers loads of people advertise things in there and if you can buy local to you it will save on delivery charges (they might even drop it off for you). Or try ebay theres always things on there too.

Good luck with it all x

I don't think you need to get all good quality stuff at first, do you? Get what you have to have in order to live and buy decent stuff over a period of time.

My daughter and her husband have taken a couple of years to get their house just as they want it, they were determined not to get into debt. When they started out they had two garden lounger chairs in the sitting room and were quite comfy :D
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

When I first moved out of home my parents raided the garage and gave me all the furniture they had been hording "just in case". I also got donations from neighbours and family who were only too pleased to get rid of things....

As around and see what people have which they can loan you or want to get rid off.

Other than that, Freecycle, local papers, closing down sales, carboot sales are the places to go.

Good luck with the new place

everyone mentions it but here is the link https://www.freecycle.co.uk.

Also put the word around. There may be people you know who just want to get rid of that old fridge.

let everyone you know know you are doing this, you'll be amazed at what people can offer. freecycle is great, its amazing what people are getting rid off, might not be to your taste, but even things like a chest of drawers can be made your own with a lick of paint etc, until you can afford to get your own. charity shops are also great for bits and bobs, again its amazing what people give away to these places, check out your local area and see what they have to offer.
    best of luck

When me and my now ex moved into our first house together, we got all our furniture from the local St Clare's Hospice warehouse shop. It was all fab quality (we got everything apart from a bed) and we just had to buy throws for the sofas (v v comfortable but the floral pattern wasnt quite to our taste.:o) We got a dining table & chairs, side tables and a tv table - everything!!! Think we spent less than £100 including getting it all delivered.

Do try eBay too - you can get very lucky. We bought a gorgeous flat packed wrought iron and glass coffee table for a friend for £9 - retail price was £90 and it had never been unpacked or assembled! We collected it too (you can search in a maximum area from you) so that was free. Bargain!
