Upgrading old timer on old boiler (plus any advice on any boiler replacement grants?)

Hi everyone,
Our boiler is very old (Glowworm FuelSaver MKII) and so is the heating and hot water timer (Landis & Gyr).
The timer is very clunky and I was wondering if it was an easy thing that I could upgrade myself. I unscrewed it from the wall and it came off as one whole unit leaving just the contacts on the wall. This made me think that I could just buy a new unit and easily swap it without messing around with wiring? also if so any suggestions on how to select a replacement?
Also if anybody knows of any grants that could help me replace my boiler then the advise would be most welcome (Based in Nottingham).

Kind regards,
Mat

Changing the timer:

Regarding grant for CH boiler the 'Green Deal'(see thread above) might be an option, but I wouldn't personally change a working boiler.0 -
As per the above referenced thread. It should be possible to obtain a new timer that's compatible with the existing backplate.
e.g.http://www.thermsaver.co.uk/heating-controls/programmer-replacement.htmlThat gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
The other posters are right to caution you about replacing a working boiler. However, if you can get a replacement for free via a grant funded scheme, I would say that it is worth looking into. Your current boiler will consume about 20% more fuel than a modern condensing boiler. So if your gas bill is around £800 per year, you might realise savings of £150 per year.
The Energy Company Obligation may, in certain circumstances, provide finance for boiler replacement. The eligibility criteria are complex. Either you personally meet the criteria (on benefits?), your house does (has either a solid wall or a narrow cavity wall that you would be willing to insulate), or you are located in a defined low income area.
If you think you might be eligible you should call the Energy Savings Advice Service on 0300 1231234.0 -
Believe me,it isnt an old boiler !
Regarding your timer, im guessing that you have independent control of both heating and hot water? Can you move either slider on the clock independently of each other? if so then with good electrical knowledge you could swap it for a more sophisticated 7 day multi time twin channel digital programmer which would give you more control, flexibility and would likely save you energy.
As others have said, there may be an L&G prgrammer which shares a common backplate with your existing clockwork model.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
