Depends on your butcher...mince beef is pretty cheap. Do you prefer standard (very cheap) or extra lean mince (more expensive)? Chicken breast is quite expensive. Do you prefer free range chicken (very expensive) or barn raised chicken (cheaper version)? Do you prefer standard grain fed chicken (cheaper) or corn fed chicken (more expensive)? Pies are expensive. You should only get them as a luxury item.

Personally my local butcher does 5lb of standard beef mince for £5 and does 3 whole barn raised chickens for £10.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Our butcher (in Surrey) does 3lb very lean steak mince for £6 and 2 whole free range chickens for £12 (just under 2kg in weight each). Those are the main things I buy from there. Even if you are buying for one you could get a whole chicken and raost it then freeze the leftovers. I do this and use the chicken in soup, faijitas, stir fry, curry, risotto etc. I never buy chicken breast any more, roast chicken gives a great flavour in these dishes.

    Thanks for the tips.

I prefer Lean mince and barn raised chicken. I usually get the Frozen Chicken Breast Fillets from Asda which is 1KG for £3.99 which usually lasts for a few meals.

Your butcher must be selling at a loss then or is selling crap. My butcher, who is my mate and gives 'mates rates', would charge circa £27/28 for those same items.

    As for the OP:
    £15 should buy you:

    1lb lean mince @£2.75
    1lb (6) pork and herb sausages £3
    4 homemade beefburgers @75p each £3
    1 4lb roasting chicken @£6

    £14.75 or so.

How much are roughly butchers chicken breast fillets or is it better value to by a whole chicken?

You could get loads if you live in a sensibly priced area and you don't buy the most expensive cuts. If you don't know what is cheapest don't be shy to ask: just say you want chicken and what is good value today please? It's no different to asking the pharmacist, they are the 'expert'. There is a lengthy thread on using butchers started by Coolbikerchick if you run a search which you might find useful.

Consider a whole chicken or legs instead of breast fillets, they are generally cheaper and more versatile. Remember that supermarket meat is often pumped full of water, Asda's frozen fillets contain "Chicken Breast (87%) , Water , Salt , Stabilisers (Diphosphates, Triphosphates)" so about 1/8 is additives!! You might therefore seem to get less for the same money from the butcher because there is no added water.

Don't see the point in getting pies from the butcher, you won't get that much meat for your money because you are paying for the time in making it - maybe make a stew/ casserole/ savoury mince dish for the first day or two, then eat leftovers reheated with a (ready made) pastry lid.

Are there any meat markets near you? They tend to be a little cheaper than butchers because its a load of butchers screaming and shouting lower prices than the other.
I get 1kg, sometimes 1.5kg of mini fillets for a fiver but sometimes I get about ten biig chicken breasts for a tenner. I sometimes go on a saturday but around 4 to haggle and get an even better deal.

Well if i get two largish breast fillets, he'll charge around £5 but bear in mind one breast is easily enough for two adults. However, for another quid you get a whole chicken which you could easily eke out to five meals AND stock from the carcass at the end. It's what we do now.

My local butcher does the following £15 meat pack

    1-1lb beef mince
    2-1lb stewing beef
    3-1lb pork chops
    4-1lb pork steaks
    5-1lb sausage
    6-2 chicken fillets
    7-4 beef burgers

I think its pretty good value and the mince isn't full of fat, he also lets you swap items 1 to 5
