Company Car Tax & Fuel Benefit

Options
Hi, I have a company van for which I pay tax on as I also have private use.
Please can anyone confirm whether commuting to and from work is classed as business use or private. I have subsidised fuel for private use and I did have to pay for private use and commuting, then they said I did not have to include commuting on my monthly calculations and now they've changed their minds again.

    Where does your contract say your place of work is?
    do you always go to the same place each day?

    Mine says 'based at home' so I can claim all miles I do to customers
    If you go to the same place each day & your contract says you work from there - I can't see how the commute would be business miles

    There are some worked examples on the Inland Revenue site IIRC.

    Say you work 20 miles from home and client is another 40 beyond that.
    40 miles a day = private.
    80 = business.

    Same also applies if client is in opposite direction to the office. You have to deduct the 40.

    Thank goodness I work from home now - the mileage returns used to do my head in :)
