When i lived in London my friend who owned a large white goods shop in Forest Gate had a brother who was a detective in the CID and i remember him telling my friend that customers wouldn`t be able to now bounce checks on him as it had just been made a criminal offence, this was in about 1994 ish.
Heres a link to a few people asking the same question.
I would tell him it is a criminal offence and you will take the cheque to the police if he doesn`t settle the account in full asap in cash.
