It's not just 2 extra convictions though. To an underwriter, it is an indication that you really don't get the point of the penalty system and haven't learnt. You are a significantly greater risk than somebody with only 3 points.

If you hadn't 'forgotten' about the points at the start of the policy you could have argued it then, but at the moment you (or any broker) will have no idea in how DL wrote their policies when the policy renewed.

That information has come from hours of putting dummy quotes together. I know it'll not be 100% accurate but it'll be in the same ball park. It was also confirmed by a motoring insurance broker.

At the moment they are adding 230% loading for the 2 extra convictions. I can't see how that is justifiable.

How would a motoring Insurance broker know how Direct Line who do not deal with brokers would load or otherwise?

The dummy quotes are only an indication if they're with Direct Line, bear in mind that if you're applying for numerous quotes with varying information from the same PC is can sometimes through the quotes as some insurers will recognise the ip address and give false indications.

Direct Line are a mass market direct insurer who tend to "cherry pick" i.e. to not write much outside of mainstream risks. For them to apply a 230% loading for 3 unspent motoring convictions would not surprise me.

No insurance broker will know Direct Line's rating structure as they are a direct insurer who have never operated in the broker market.

OP, you need to run dummy quotes on the DL website.

If they are telling you they would have loaded 230% had they known but are only loading 30-50% on a new quote then you can justifiably suspect they are unfairly taking advantage of your "captive punter" status and a complaint along those lines followed by FOS referral should be your next step
  • Yes that is exactly the route I have taken. I am still at the complaint stage with DL. Unfortunately I cannot get a quote for 9 points but for six the price is £519.

To me they are clearly using their position to pressure me into paying. I initially became aware of all this at 7pm on Tuesday. I called again this evening to be told they can do no more until Monday as the office closed at weekends. I've also been told that the insurance will be cancelled by as early Tuesday morning if I don't pay up. Effectively I've had 4 working days to sort this out.

you need to avoid cancellation so pay if necessary and reclaim the costs if unfair although establishing that if you can't get anonymous quotes might be tricky

This is what would worry me - if you cannot get a dummy quote on the DL website when you input that you have 9 points it is likely to be because they would not usually quote for/cover someone with that many points.

As mentioned, avoiding a cancellation in the first instance is the most important thing, as that will have costly implications for you in the future. I would be doing everything I can to convince DL it was an oversight of yours when not declaring the convictions, although given there is more than one undeclared they may be less likely to accept this.
