My current PC is very poorly and so I have decided to buy a new one. I want to take some of my current program applications to my new pc but....
Two of the programs are on floppy only and the new pc does not have a floppy. I know how to backup the data to a cd, but how do I back up the actual program so that I can install it on the new pc.
Thanks

Copy all the files from the floppy to a CD. The files should include a setup program for installing the program, and installing from the CD should be the same as installing from the floppy.0

With huge difficulty. When programs are installed, they install a 'core' set of files usually along with library files (DLLs) which are shared by other programs. In order to copy a program like you're mentioning, you'd need to know precisely what files to copy which is near impossible. And then on top of that, you've got to consider changes which are made to the registry. The registry is a bunch of 'hives' which store configuration information about your PC. Almost all software installed will have various entries in the registry, so you'd need to know that too.
Forget this idea and concentrate on where to get the original disks from - or whether to buy / download replacement software.Throwing acid is bad.... in some peoples eyes...0 -
Thanks both. I did try to copy across the files that I could see were obvious, including the setup, but it would not reinstall. One of the progs is Cucusoft which i use for my Ipod, it was a free trial which was upgraded. I have emailed them, but they say they have no record of me buying the upgrade! The second is a sharegroup program which is only available on floppy. I guess I am knackered!0

I don't really see why this would not work, if you really did copy all of the files from the installation floppy to a CD. All that you are doing is changing the medium that the files are stored on, so provided that you did make a copy of the installation floppy, it should install. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Make sure you show hidden files and copy those too. See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspxThanks both. I did try to copy across the files that I could see were obvious, including the setup, but it would not reinstall.0 -
If you know what you doing, will be far simpler to remove floppy from old pc, and place in new pc. Plus you can download plenty of free programs thats does the same.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0

Thanks, am just trying to see the hidden files and copying again. The direct copy from floppy is just not working, don't know why. So am trying to see all the installed files and copying those.0
