Quotemehappy and the missing £227

The first I knew about Quotemehappy automatically renewing my Car Insurance without asking me was when I received my credit card statement. It showed that a sum of £277 had been taken out of my account without my knowledge. A telephone number was given on the statement. This turned out to be that of the parent company AVIVA but all they could do was to refer me to an internet site for QMH. You can’t speak to anyone – ever.
It turns out that when I took out a policy last year, I apparently signed up to an automatic renewal for this year. When I explained that I would never, under any circumstances take out insurance without seeking alternative quotes there reply in writing was ‘sorry’.
The £277 was £40 more expensive than their on line quote and £90 more expensive than like for like quotes from other providers.
As my statement arrived 14 days after the money had been removed from my account the cost of stopping the policy is £53 plus.
It seems I’m now locked in for a year.
My bank has asked me to write to them detailing the fact that on no account is QMH or their parent company AVIVA allowed to withdraw any future sums from my bank account. Apparently it’s not the first time they’ve come across this but as they explained, if in the original small print I accepted the auto renewal principal no matter how it was hidden in the webpage there was little I could do. This is a fact of which I’m sure QMH are only too aware.
Their replies to my emails have been at best cut and paste jobs from various pre-scripted answers and they seem alarmingly indifferent to the fact that in my opinion they’ve accessed my bank account against my wishes and helped themselves to over £277.
There are two morals to this sorry tale. The first is to check and double check every box which appears on any web page to which you’re committing to a contract. The second is not to touch QMH with a barge pole. If you do, check your statements, you too could find chunks of money removed without you ever knowing.

    You are going to have to be very careful from now on.

    Companies that don't automatically renew are in the minority, and most that do it do so by default!

    So you got no renewal quote or docs from them for the new policy?????

    Auto renewal doesn't stop you from shopping around. It just means that it will renew if you don't cancel.


    Had you arranged other cover from renewal date?

    Did you read the t&c's that QMH emailled/sent you?

    It is in their t&c's, and the FSA back auto renewals, so its seems a painful lesson
    Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?
