Removal costs

I moved from Nottingham to Geneva, Switzerland at the end of 2011 and the removal cost was around ~ 2000 GBP as I recall. I had to get 3 quotes as my employer paid for the move and they chose the middle one.
So, I'd say your quote is on the high side; shop around a bit before choosing.
Good luck with the move!Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.
32 and mortgage-free

I bet that was a containerised move taking two weeks, not really what the OP wants.
(or it was a very small property)0 -
Has anyone moved from Scotland to Northern Ireland, or similar move involving a ferry? Just trying to get an idea of the cost - I'm in a 1 bed flat although wont be taking many large items with me except 2 sofas, dining table and a mattress - the rest will be boxes and I'm hoping that will keep costs down a bit.I got ham but i'm not a hamster.....0

We are moving in a couple of weeks time and I've been astonished at the removal quotes we have had. Bearing in mind we are moving 15 miles and from a 2 bed Bungalow to a 4 bed House. One quote was £1950, another £1500 and the company we preferred and were expecting to be more expensive as they had been highly recommended by several friends and co-workers saying they are really good, only £900. So it does pay to get more than one quote.
We purposely sought quotes from local firms and not big national firms, thinking they would be cheaper, but that isn't always true.0 -

Hi, I am at the moment planning a relocation from NI to Birmingham. After a lot of research I decided to rent a van and do it myself. I will be renting a largish van in Birmingham, driving to Scotland, taking a ferry, packing staff, then coming back through Liverpool. I expect this should cost me up to 600 pounds in ferry fees, van rental and petrol. I have already booked annual leave for 15-18 Apr to do it. If you or anybody else is planning anything similar from Scotland to NI and the timing would suit I would welcome a possibility to fill an empty van to NI and save some of my costs.0 -

If you're renting a 7.5 tonner, rental companies only rent to genuine private moves or companies with an operators licence.
It would be worth you taking some evidence you're moving eg take a letter from your solicitor has sent you about the move. You can show this to the rental co if they want confirmation you're private and would be proof for the police if they stop you and query the lack of tacho.
The rental van will not normally have blankets or ties, get yourself something you can to tie items that need it to the side of the van.0 -
Thanks for words of advice, but by largish van I did not really mean a truck, rather something like a bigger Ford Transit, 11m3, up 1.5 tonne payload.0

I recently paid £240 for a move, granted only around the corner but that was for no-packing or materials, 3 men and we were done by 1pm. I can't see how you get from that figure (which I appreciate is very cheap as I got a good deal) all the way through to £3K! Get more quotes. Maybe look for companies based at your destination as well as those local to you.0

For a 500 mile move you have the labour loading the van, then a 500m drive which will take about 11 hours, then unload the van most likely the next day and then an 11 hour drive back.
Plus the cost of diesel and wear and tear on the van.
It soon adds up.
The fuel will cost about £5500
