Just need to add a dictionary (spell checker).

Download and save the above.
Thunderbird / Tools / Add Ons / click the drop arrow on the cog (top RHS) select 'install addon', navigate to where you saved the downloaded file.
Then, Tools / Options / Composition / Spelling, and set the correct language.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Modern versions of Thunderbird have a Firefox-style add-on browser now. No need to faff about saving XPI files any more.
Menu button -> Addons, type "British english" in the search box, then install it.0 -

I use:
Adblock Plus: blocks ads and tracking images in emails. Less important these days since Thunderbird blocks all images by default anyway.
