9 days ago my car wouldnt start - the battery was flat - got it jump started and took it to the garage where they tested the battery and said there was not enough charge to start the car - bought new batter.
2 hours later it did the same thing again. AA came out (werent really interested) said battery was fine and alternator was fine so just put it down as "inconclusive".
Last night it did it again - got 2 guys to jump start it and one of the guys said the fan was going but the engine wasnt hot meaning that the fan shouldnt be going (i'd only been driving it for about 5 minutes before stopping somewhere so the engine wouldnt have been hot). Drove it home (25 miles) and when I got home I parked it on my drive and turned the ignition off. Tried to start it again and it was dead again. Any ideas? Its a Renault Megane Scenic 1997

Get the alternator checked properly by an auto electrician.

Its either not putting out enough charge or its intermittent.

2 hours = fairly heavy drain. So unless your leaving the headlights on etc.
Alternator seems like the issue to me.

Even if the fans going the alternator should put out enough power to compensate. Or is the fan running with the engine off?

sounds like a poor earth normaly you would have a earth strap running from the gearbox to the body of the car. if this gets corroded you often get a positive feed useing smaller wires and running to earth. could be the cause for both the battery going flat and the fan going.
simple diy job locate strap clean or replace. or try a local auto electrician.
    best of luck

Sounds like an electrical fault , the battery / alternator should be OK if powering the car when driving, but it's strange about the fan running for long times after switch off, that would kill the battery.
GOOD LUCK HOPE IT'S FIXED SOON

  • We had this problem with our Megane Scenic. (Battery under the drivers seat) Started when we went on holiday last May. We had the RAC out to the car and they said to begin with that we needed a new battery! But we couldn't afford their battery prices so they replaced one of the battery connectors.
The wire had gone rusty and come away from the battery.
The OH did a temporary fix and then bought new terminal connectors off eBay.
    Don't know if this helps?
