Fence Paint

I'm looking for recommendations for a water based fence paint.

I need something thats reasonably priced as I've got 56 sides of 6 foot fencing to paint (36 of which are brand new).

Thanks

Be prepared to re coat the fence every other year.Waterbased stains do not penetrate the timber, they sit on the surface and over the coarse of a year the wind, rain and sun will erode the surface of the stain.

Its not cheap but I would recommend Architectural Solignum (Spirit based) I've used it for year on Joinery for The National Trust and Church of England.. Its not cheap but will penetrate the timber and last for at least 4-6yrs then re-coat.I've used it on my fencing 4 yrs ago and its still looking good.My neighbours fence was done last year with water based fencing stain from Cuprinol, if you don't go with Solignum avoid waterbased at all cost.

you can try bedec barn paint , it is water based , won't peel or flake , much better than the cuprinol etc stuff you can stay on, can be thinned , esp for 1st coat http://www.bedec.co.uk/

I've been using either B & Q or Homebase own for the past 15 years, recoating every couple of years. All of the existing fencing is fine so looks like I will be continuing with the existing stuff then, if thats the prices of the alternatives. I'm on a tight budget so thats about all I can affford.

The trick for me has been to use cheap water based treatment (I use Wickes) but speed the job up. I use a cheap (£15-£20) basic spray gun and it is vastly quicker not this one but same sort of thing...

I need to water down the treatment by about a third with water for it to spray cleanly but it dries the same colour and as the gun chucks it at the fence it seems to soak in better and I find it lasts longer than panels done by brush. Less runs and the finish is very consistent as it gets in all the nooks.

Only down side is the gun tank doesn't hold much so you need to fill up very often and it can get quite messy. If your organised with gloves and a big waterproof box with your treatment pot, a bottle of dilution water and some rags in its not hard.

Cleaning up of the spray gun afterwards is not too hard with water based products and you can spray clean water through it.
