Help! Strange Problem (brakes lock on) with Iveco Daily Brakes when reversing only.

Hi everyone

Hoping someone can help here. Any Iveco or van experts?

Problem is as follows:

6 Months ago when REVERSING up to a loading bay I pressed the brakes on the Van and they locked on (couldn't move the van forward or backward). So, we called out the garage we use and he said the Van needed new callipers. We authorised the work to be done (in the region of £400). So... Three months on... The other day, the same thing happened again... So, we called out the garage and they told us "We can't see anything wrong. Nothing is seized etc". He drove the Van round the block (in my presence) and returned with no problems. We apologised for wasting his time etc. Then again this morning....We are reversing the van and guess what....The Brakes locked on (it feels like the rear brakes). So, we drove forward and the brakes freed themselves (with a bit of a grind and shudder). It seems that the only time this problem ocurs is when the van is reversing. Obviously, when the Mechanic took it round the block he didn't try reverse. Has anybody any idea why the Brakes would act in this manner when reversing?

Thank you in advance.

Oh yeah, van is 05 Reg

If its drums then a broken spring, When you reverse the shoes move and lock the wheel.

If its calipers then it maybe the gearbox and not the brakes.

Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?

If its drums on the rear then you need to use another garage, that would have been the first place to look last time rather than fitting new front calipers. If it is discs on the rear then it could be badly fitted pads, gearbox/diff problem or a compensater valve locking up

It's quite common for these for the handbrake mechanism to seize on and gently burn away the inner pad. With a change of direction the now loose pad joins in and seizes the lot. When you then change the pads/caliper without freeing off the handbrake, you have one, very tight wheel.
Due to the time lapsed maybe the handbrake did seize again, but perhaps they didn't do othe job properly in the first place and chose to ignore the now, whittled down new pad.
