. I would guess that Idiophreak bought something small, reliable probably japanese/asian: like a yarris? rather than citroen, alpha, fiat or renault.

Aygo - good detective work :)

Have actually just agreed a lease on a Juke for myself...but thought I wouldn't mention that as it's not the most MSE decision I've ever made ;)

Brakepads last anything from 8000 to 15,000 miles on average. So if you do more miles than that. Then they will need replacing often.

You must drive on your brakes!!

My 2 tonne, awd auto needed the fronts replace at 50,000 miles and the rears at 56,000 miles!

Thanks for the replies. Sorry cant quote everyone individually but I have read all the comments. Leasing isnt really an option as we cant afford it. The picasso was no doubt over priced but we thought buying from a dealer would be a safe bet. The brakes were all changed pads and discs before we picked up the car and we do less than 10k a year. Im on my way to look at a 2001vw polo saloon. Dirt cheap tax and mot til august. I will post again when I have checked it out.

You will lose money selling your car and the polo may also require brakes and other work doing so the small savings in the tax maybe pocket change.

At least you know whats been done on your current car.

How much is the 2001 Polo? Over £800 its too much... Get a 2003 car for that money.

I give my 10 year old clio to my mum after I bought a new polo

6 years later - she still has it and has probably spent less maintaining it in those 6 years than I have spent manintaining my now 6 year polo.

    Interesting thread, we're in the same boat and having the same dilemma;

I bought a 2002 Punto for £1200 six months ago, but it has just developed a potentially expensive fault (gearbox), plus it leaks like a sieve into the footwell behind the passenger seat, the exhaust rattles whenever I reverse and the power steering motor is a bit unpredictable. Road tax is £120 a year, mpg is about 35, Insurance group 4? and I do around 10k miles per year.

We're considering leasing a 1.0l Citroen C1 for 2 years for £118/ month inc road tax for 10k miles per year. I can use the Punto as a £500 deposit.

We live about 12 miles from the supermarket/shops and I drive to Wales a few times a year to visit family (approx 360m round trip).

Having looked at the new car brochure I think I might do a spreadsheet to compare costs based on 5 years, comparing 10 year old car running for about £600 maintenance per year, leasing, or buying the C1 on a PCP. As my signature suggests, we need to really make sure we choose the right option for us but it's not easy!

I looked at Idiophreak's Aygo as it is not a car I can relate to, but looking at the deprecation charts better than many (if not all the toyotas) and better than any other manufacturer model i randomly chose, if it is reliable and your type of car, it could be a real winner

On the other side, if you purchase an a 2002ish yaris, if it lasts one year you are sort of break even. 2 years you gain, plus if someone scratches/dents it you not not have any bills to pay. Just buy quality item from a good manufacturer. Here is the verso yaris http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/miscellaneous/2011-07/yaris-verso/

Saying this, some people will be unlucky. So far I'm one of the lucky ones, not toyota but honda, and my car is a 1991 and very reliable.

Just looked at the citroen c zero and it looses £15000 in the first year????
