Providing proof

I've been driving around for the last 5 years as a named driver on my wife's car insurance policy.
Now I need my own car and insurance but when it comes to getting a quote, can I put myself down as having 5 years no-claims bonus?, as I (we) haven't made any claims during that 5 years. But obviously I don't have an insurance renewal notice in my name to prove that fact.
So will the insurance companies definitely ask for proof of ncb after signing up with them because if so, i'll just have to do the quote based on zero ncb (with much higher premiums of course).

You have 5 years of claim free driving but I'm afraid you don't have 5 years NCB.
Yes, some do ask for proof.0 -
As above YOU dont have 5 years no claims because your a named driver. The policy is not in your name.
You have zero no claims. Take out insurance and say you have 5 years they will either cancel your policy or send you a bill for the balance.
The current quote maybe 60 or 70% off. So add that one.
You have zero no claims.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Although you have zero no claim discount, try a local broker (not swinton) who should be able to get you an introductory discount to reflect the difference between your years of claim free experience and a brand new motorist.0

Who is your wife's insurance with? Nowadays, a lot of insurers offer named driver discount if you insure yourself with the them. Admiral and Direct Line both do this, and I'm sure there are others. Worth a call to your wife's insurance company!0

Thanks everyone for your advice.
I feared that was the case but i just wanted to make sure. Bit gutted to be getting treated as a 'new driver' when i do the quotes as the difference is huge - more than £200.
Wife's insured with Hastings so like you say, maybe i could call them and see if they offer a named driver discount..0 -
My husband was a named driver on his mum's car and was able to be put down for no claims when we got our own car. I believe they just check with the insurer.0

When I changed insurers a few weeks ago I asked this same question - and they told me that they ask for proof of NCB from a random sample of new policyholders.
So, luck of the draw ... but if it was me I'd not lie about this in case you ever need to claim. I'd own up to the situation and ask for an introductaory discount on the basis so so many years' of driving that's been claim free.0 -
We have just had the same problem. I makes me SO ANGRY.......... When my husband retired we decided to sell one car, and share the remaining one. I had max. NCB which I didn't want to lose so I was the policy holder with husband as named driver, (he has 3 years no claims)
This year we decided to put the policy in my husbands name and me as a named driver. RAC gave us a reasonable quote, UNTIL they asked for HIS no claims NCB. the amount shot up! i find this outrageous............ why should it not be possible for a couple to share NCB?
Can anyone recommend companies that ARE reasonable and do offer joint NCB? Thank youWhen man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0 -

The NCD has to be in the name of the policyholder with most companies.
You can make use of this to keep both your NCD alive by alternating the policyholder each year.
Or if you are certain you will never need 2 cars again, then let the least valiable NCD die (your husband's).
Should you be unable to drive in future due to illness/no longer on the planet etc then (assuming he's still around) he will be able to transfer your NCD over to himself.0 -
Thank you SO much for your reply Quentin. So, if I keep the insurance in my name until such a time I no longer can/want to drive, my husband can 'have' my NCD? He is worried he would have to start afresh as a new driver! and he is NOT happy about that at all lol
Gosh they don't make life easy do they?
Thanks again.
P.S. Do you know the companies that WILL allow us to alternate each year please? When man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0
