just installing avg anti-virus (free) after having big problems with f-secure.

Now running a complete test of my computer...its currently on 40 minutes and 134k files...

its not been tested for a while (not sure how long) but no threats found so far, whoo!

is this a long time to take to scan my computer? its been busy scanning the entire time, but I didn't think it would take quite this long...can anyone reassure me this is ok/normal?

It depends on the size and contents of the drive(s) and whether you're doing other things on your machine at the same time. I'm happy to be corrected, but I think most AV programs will not take priority, by default, as far as processor usage is concerned. That is to say it will slow down when the PC is managing other tasks.
I trust you uninstalled F-secure? Incidentally, I had problems with that program too; it kept crashing my machine.

its finished...took an hour. I was using firefox and msn at the time which probably slowed it down, but I hadn't thought it would take *quite* that long.

Yes I have un-installed f-secure...this is the first time I've had problems with it..used it for almost 2 years and hasn't ever crashed, its just refused to update for 2 weeks so thought I'd better get something else sorted out

    Thanks for the reassurance :)

AVG runs a full scan on my computer at 4am every day, and takes about 3 hours. Mind you, I've got 4 hard drives (well, 5, but 2 of them are in a mirrored array) with a total of nearly a terabyte of data!

I've been meaning to look into ways of changing this to a weekly or monthly scan, as it really doesn't need to be done daily (and will presumably wear my disks out faster), but AVG Free doesn't have an option for this. Your post has reminded me to stop procrastinating and get on with it :) Turns out you can use Windows Scheduled Tasks to trigger the scan. There's a thread on the Grisoft forum which explains exactly how to do this: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?8,48496,48496#msg-48581
