internet---page unavailable

Options
Hi,
Only just joined, hope somebody out there can help before i try using a hammer.
I'm using Win ME, I.E 6, on the net there is no problem with any site UK or abroad, but if i try to connect to a couple of sites, computeractive, vnunet, or digitallook, i get " page unavailable" every time. i've asked in comp shops, asked at work, read books and reset things they suggested, but still no good. i'm registered with them all and get newsletters from them, but i can't get back to them, or by the links in the e-mails from them, any suggestions will be welcome.

    Try a different browser.
  • installed Mozzilla, still can't get there, any other ideas ?.
  • Have you tried deleting Temporary Internet Files and cookies within IE and visiting those sites again?

Try typing the URL, e.g. https://www.vnunet.com, into the address bar in IE.

What is the exact wording of the error?
  • Tried typing the address, won't work,
Tried links from newsletter, won't work either,
    Wording that comes up is,
The page cannot be displayed, or,
    We can't find,
The page is not allways the same one. Whatever the problem is,it only seems to be with these few pages, don't know if this helps or not. Thanks anyway.
  • Hi,
Its possible that your cookies are being rejected because your security settings are too high.

    >Go to TOOLS (top of screen)
    >Internet Options
    >select "Privacy"
    >move slider to "Medium"
    >APPLY
    >OK

    Good Luck.

It could be your own computer blocking access to the sites...

There is a basic website blocking facility built into windows. Its a simple text file in the windows directory that redirects access to a different website / computer.

It can be used for removing advertising etc. when your surfing the net.

    The file is called hosts.txt

If you use a text editor (notepad) to access the file you can see if it is doing so.

The format usually used in the file is:-

    https://www.microsoft.com 127.0.0.1

The above example will stop all access to the Microsoft website and redirect it to your own computer (the 127.0.0.1 bit, this is also sometimes called localhost)

Have a look around on the net. You can sometimes download a ready made version to block most advertisors. Normally the word to search for is SUPERTRICK.
  • Thanks a lot sweep9, tried your idea of the hosts file, once i found it and got it into notepad there were about six sites in there, including the three i couldn't get too.
Once i had edited and saved it, i got to the sites first time in months, i didn't think something so frustrating could be cured so easily.
    Once again, many thanks, evad23.
